The goal of this book is to fill the many gaps that health care providers face when helping women learn self care and prevention skills. Special attention is paid to minority status, low literacy, and elderly women who may have fewer opportunities to find health information independently.

While this is ample information on reproductive health available, women experience a lack of timely information on nonreproductive health issues, such major killers as lung cancer and cardiovascular disease; adequate information for family caregivers, who are mostly women; and other disorders, ranging from AIDS to osteoporosis and urinary incontinence.

Nurses, health educators, physicians, and those interested in women's health will find this an eye-opening and important resource.

This is the 13th book in a series focusing on psychological, medical, and social issues of women. Redman explores the health care education needs of women, such as cardiovascular diseases; reproductive system diseases; cancer; motherhood; AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases; and other chronic diseases such as arthritis, diabetes, asthma, depression and anger, and pain. Redman argues that education can empower women or can continue to reinforce their subordination. Throughout, the feminist and sociological critiques of educational practices of the health care system are discussed. In addition, the author focuses on subjective well-being of women of all socioeconomic classes. The book is extremely well documented with current research studies that support the patient education needs of women for each disease. It includes a myriad of instruments for assessing women's health and education needs. Each chapter has a wonderful bibliography, as well as scholarly arguments regarding the differences of women in care seeking, health care, management of symptoms, and adaptation to chronic illnesses.
