Choice Review

Amid growing interest in Afro-Hispanic literature, Mosey (Ohio State Univ., Columbus) recognizes some neglected areas. Well organized in a historical introduction and four chapters, the book displays comprehension of the effects of the African diaspora. Afro-West Indian immigrants arrived in Costa Rica in sizeable numbers after 1872. Several authors of Anglophone Caribbean descent accepted Spanish as their language and Costa Rica as their home. With references to Marcus Garvey and Nicolas Guillen, Mosby shows the influence of early writers Dolores Joseph and Alderman Johnson Roden. She analyzes the novels of Quince Duncan and the poetry of Eulalia Bernard, Shirley Campbell, and Delia McDonald. Themes include exile, nostalgia, the search for identity and justice, and origins in Creole culture through oral traditions and calypso.
