In recent scholarship, academics have focused primarily on areas of conflict between Blacks and Jews; yet, in the long struggle to bring social justice to American society, these two groups have often worked as allies in both the organized labor and the civil rights movements.Demonstrating the complexity of the relationship of Blacks and Jews in America, African Americans and Jews in the Twentieth Century examines the competition and solidarity that have characterized Black-Jewish interactions over the past century. These essays provide an intellectual foundation for cooperative efforts to improve social justice in our society and are an invaluable resource for the study of race relations in twentieth-century America. Choice Review

A collection of revised essays and reworked versions of papers presented at a 1993 Washington University symposium, this volume reflects the ongoing scholarly interest in Black-Jewish relations that has resulted in a spate of recent publications on the subject. Contributors include well-known students of the subject and of black history, such as Hasia Diner, Robert A. Hill, Vernon J. Williams Jr., Michael Rogin, Murray Friedman, Joe W. Trotter Jr., Marshall F. Stevenson Jr., Herbert Hill, and V.P. Franklin. These contributions represent both the strength and weakness of this collection. Many of the high quality essays are modified refinements of work previously published by these scholars. The essays range broadly, from representations of the "Other" in popular and scholarly literature to mutual interaction, cooperation, and disdain in the labor and Civil Rights movements. There is no central focus to this volume; the editors' organization of the material into two discrete units, ostensibly reflecting the overarching theme of Black-Jewish convergence and Black-Jewish conflict, does not work; some material in one section can easily fit into the other, testifying to the complexity of adumbrating the Black-Jewish interchange.
