As part of the Routledge series "The Basics," Cleaver (Univ. of Durham, UK) has updated his 2004 edition to include an engaging, informative first chapter on the recent worldwide financial crisis. What follows is primarily a compact summary of a standard university-level introductory economics course summarizing key terms and theories from a middle-of-the-road Keynesian perspective. Lucid writing and an international perspective differentiate this book from similar surveys such as Economics for the Rest of Us by Moshe Adler (CH, Jun'10, 47-5754), Naked Economics by Charles Wheelan (CH, Oct'10, 48-1001), and The Little Book of Economics by Greg Ip (CH, Apr'11, 48-4591). Frequent compelling case studies, ranging from tiger extinction to coffee prices, illustrate both microeconomic and macroeconomic concepts. A final chapter examines poverty and the environment, although it has not been updated for recent developments as has the first chapter (on finance). The book has no mathematical formulas, but suffers from poorly constructed figures, unhelpful to those not already well informed about economic theory.
