Agroforestry and biodiversity conservation are critical issues in the fields of rural economic development and conservation; the two are often linked as if only together can they be beneficial. The contributors in this important synopsis provide a thorough critique of this notion and delineate the situations where these two issues are complementary and those where agroforestry may reduce biodiversity. Part 1 provides a basic understanding of agroforestry and its use as a conservation tool. Part 2 focuses more closely on the links between agroforestry and biodiversity conservation, exploring their relationship to tropical deforestation. This second part includes a fascinating chapter on cocoa production. Parts 3 and 4 deal with specific agroforestry methods and land use, always in the context of biodiversity. Part 5 covers the topic on a larger, landscape scale. Although an edited volume, the book is written smoothly and can be read and enjoyed cover-to-cover; specific chapters are self-contained and could be used as upper-level undergraduate or graduate readings. ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended.
