One day in 2002, three friends--a Somali immigrant, a Pakistan-born U.S. citizen, and a hometown African American--met in a Columbus, Ohio coffee shop and vented over civilian casualties in the war in Afghanistan. In 2003, three residents of Columbus, Ohio--a native-born American, a naturalized citizen, and an illegal alien--were accused of providing "material assistance" to Islamist terrorists. Specifically, they plotted to blow up the Brooklyn Bridge. Welsh-Huggins (legal affairs reporter, Associated Press) here tells the story of Iyman Faris and his friends. Unlike most such narratives, which limit themselves to legal issues, Hatred at Home shows readers the conspirators as they are radicalized. Welsh-Huggins follows them as they swim in the vast river of displaced persons migrating around the world, meet terrorists, attend training camps (or, in one case, fail to find one), and assume new identities. Eventually, they meet in Columbus. Almost from the beginning, the authorities are aware of them. Armed with new antiterrorism laws, prosecutors use questionable tactics verging on entrapment. Surveillance leads to interrogation, and eventually to pressuring a confession from the mentally ill Faris. Though the conspirators did nothing but talk and collect information, all were convicted. The Obama administration has now abandoned the most objectionable tactics, but danger of abuse remains.
