Voices of mothers, teachers, and children provide a picture of how low-income African-American families cope with the daily pressures and responsibilities of child rearing. The book examines how larger socio- economic factors influence families' circumstances and histories, and describes child-rearing strategies parents use to promote a smooth transition into school, drawing on interviews with Indianapolis mothers as their children made the transition from Head Start to kindergarten and through second grade.
