Explorers in Eden uncovers a vast array of diaries, letters, photographs, paintings, postcards, advertisements, and scholarly monographs, revealing how Anglo-Americans developed a fascination with pueblo culture they identified with biblical associations.

Author Notes

Jerold S. Auerbach was born in Philadelphia on May 7, 1936. After graduating from Oberlin College, he entered Columbia Law School in the hopes of becoming a civil liberties lawyer. However, he quickly became disenchanted with the legal system and left the legal profession to pursue a career in history. He became a professor of history at Wellesley College.

Auerbach's experiences with the law greatly influenced his writing. Through such works as Unequal Justice and Justice Without Law, he explored the darker side of the legal profession and struggled to understand and interpret law as it pertained to American society. His Jewish background also influenced his writing and provided us with such works as Rabbis and Lawyers and Jacob's Voices: Reflections of a Wandering American Jew, the latter an autobiographical work.

Auerbach (Wellesley College) offers a fascinating study of photographers, ethnographers, entrepreneurs, artists, and feminists who escaped the perils of the Gilded Age in the pueblos of the US Southwest between 1880 and 1940. For Frank Hamilton Cushing, Fred Harvey, Matilda Stevenson, Charles F. Lummis, Edward S. Curtis, Elsie Clews Parsons, Mabel Dodge Luhan, John Collier, Ruth Benedict, and other antimodernists, the Pueblo Indians epitomized primitive virtues that modernity had not yet destroyed. Auerbach demonstrates how, encountering the Pueblo peoples through the lenses of their own fanciful projections, each of the antimodernists distorted Pueblo culture in their personal quests to find an elixir for their discontent with modernity. Ultimately, the visitors' own romanticized images of Pueblo culture reveal less about the indigenous peoples encountered than about their own despair with US culture. ^BSumming Up: Recommended.
