Summary

The media strongly influences our everyday notions of gender roles and our concepts of gender identity. The Encyclopedia of Gender in Media critically examines the role of the media in enabling, facilitating, or challenging the social construction of gender in our society. The work addresses a variety of entertainment and news content in print and electronic media and explores the social construction of masculinity as well as femininity. In addition to representations of gender within the media, we also analyze gender issues related to media ownership and the media workforce. Despite an abundance of textbooks, anthologies, and university press monographs on the topic of gender in media, until now no comprehensive reference work has tackled this topic of perennial interest in student research and papers.

Booklist Review

Gender and the assumptions it is freighted with, beginning at the moment of birth and the universal question, Is it a boy or a girl? permeates everything. Those assumptions are discernible, even literally broadcast, in media, in ways subtle and in ways blatant. Examination of both theory and practice reveal and explain society's pervasive genderedness as manifest in its media. This survey of the media gives ample attention to theoretical and conceptual concerns such as discourse analysis, feminism, postmodernism, queer theory, and the social construction of gender. These theoretical tools inform examination of media, including children's television, comics, film, reality television, sitcoms, sports, toys, massively multiplayer online role-playing games, video gaming, and a range of women's magazines. Theorists and commentators such as bell hooks, Gloria Steinem, Marshall McLuhan, Roland Barthes, and Bill Moyers receive their due. The academic authors' expository and analytical treatment of their topics becomes most engaging in articles on the gendered aspects of the ways in which people use media, such as cyberdating, social networks, and music, and about the ways in which media portray motherhood, fatherhood, the single woman, metrosexual males, and heroes (including action heroes). A few articles, including those on hacking, media literacy, and e-zines, are oddly mute on these topics' gender aspects. The usual genderless structural elements of the subject-encyclopedia genre a topical table of contents, subject cross-references, article bibliographies, and a comprehensive subject index help readers exploit the contents to their optimum value. Throughout, the encyclopedia's articles offer intelligible, informative, and accessible explorations of a wide range of subjects, giving media consumers opportunities to examine media issues from critical angles that may not be their custom. This encyclopedia does a remarkable job of providing an orientation to two vast topics--media (film, television, radio, music, reading material, and new media, represented by online sources), and gender (female, male, lesbian, gay, transsexual)--in slightly over 170 entries. Connections between gender and media are emphasized. Entries have references for further reading and cross-references to related entries. Front matter lists entries alphabetically and by broad subject: "Biographies," "Concepts and Theories," "Discrimination and Media Effects," "Internet and New Media," "Media Industry," "Media Modes," "Media Portrayals and Representations," and "Policy and Advocacy." The volume gives especially generous coverage to theory, media modes (including music videos, pornography, reality-based television, sports media, and video gaming), and new media. A chronology lists media/gender milestones from 1792 to 2012. The back matter includes a glossary; a resource guide of books, journal titles, and Internet sources; an appendix of selected websites; and a comprehensive index. This resource nicely complements The Handbook of Gender, Sex, and Media, edited by Karen Ross (2012), and will appeal to scholarly and general users in gender studies, communication and media studies, sociology, anthropology, political science, and psychology. In exploring "the complexity of media across diverse platforms, technologies, and cultural, economic, and political landscapes," Kosut (media, society, and the arts, SUNY Purchase) and other academic contributors look at mass media from the viewpoint of gender and examine how one's gender influences or is influenced by the media. They raise the question of whether mass media changes society and culture or merely reflects changes that are already occurring. The 183 signed, alphabetically arranged articles are one and a half to four pages long. Coverage includes biographies (Kalle Lasn, Gloria Steinem), most of which are complemented by a small black-and-white portrait. Other topics range from "Quantitative Content Analysis" to "Feminist Theory" and from "Women's Magazines: Fashion" to "Blogs and Blogging." Longer pieces include a three-page article titled "Affirmative Action," which discusses the influence of related policies on the workplace; the feminist movement; and staffing decisions within journalism, broadcasting, and similar professions. A four-page article, "Sitcoms," looks at television shows (e.g., "All in the Family") from the 1950s through today. The 1792-2012 time line offers an interesting overview of cultural, feminist, and societal change as depicted by the various types and uses of mass media. Cross references within the text are lacking, but the detailed index and see-also references after each article provide adequate access points.
