Why in some parts of the world do parents rarely play with their babies and never with toddlers? Why in some cultures are children not fully recognized as individuals until they are older? How are routine habits of etiquette and hygiene taught - or not - to children in other societies? Drawing on a lifetime's experience as an anthropologist, David F. Lancy takes us on a journey across the globe to show how children are raised differently in different cultures. Intriguing, and sometimes shocking, his discoveries demonstrate that our ideas about children are recent, untested, and often contrast starkly with those in other parts of the world. Lancy argues that we are, by historical standards, guilty of over-parenting, and of micro-managing our children's lives. Challenging many of our accepted truths, his book will encourage parents to think differently about children, and by doing so to feel more relaxed about their own parenting skills.

Choice Review

Lancy (emer., anthropology, Utah State) attempts a difficult task--turning thickly laden academic findings into thinly accessible word bites for a popular audience--with mixed success. His writing is uneven, made up of "essays" used for previous purposes that he puts together in inelegant fashion, attempting to juxtapose fascinating child-rearing tales from little-known world cultures with folksy, personal views and values. (E.g., he spends three pages offering personal criticism of a Disney movie and nearly that long chastising his students' parents for their "inhumane" names.) He likewise fails to succeed as an academic in his text, cherry-picking obscure empirical findings, offering little scientific defense of methods, and, again, inserting his own subjectivity at every turn. There are several incidences where his assertions are false or at least outdated (e.g., current policies in Sweden). Though this reviewer fundamentally agrees with his message--that, by and large, US parents are guilty of micromanaging their children's lives--the author's heavy-handed, uneven, and largely subjective approach to delivering it makes this a marginal purchase.
