This reference handbook on gender inequality is part of ABC-CLIO's "Contemporary World Issues" series. While Newton has written many other reference handbooks for this series, this reviewer was confused as to why he was selected for this volume, as he is not an expert in gender studies. However, this is not to suggest that his book is not useful or accurate. There is much to appreciate in this well-laid-out and researched reference book, particularly the discussion in chapter 1 ("Background and History") of a possible fourth wave of feminism. Although chapter 3, "Perspectives," does not seem to offer much depth (altogether consisting primarily of subjective pieces, program evaluation, and case studies), it is notable for including a variety of voices, primarily those who identify as women, accompanied by short biographies. Chapter 4 ("Profiles") focuses on historical women but also details multiple organizations. Data is presented where appropriate; for instance, chapter 5 ("Data and Documents") offers data and resources for additional research, and specific titles are discussed in detail in chapter 6 ("Resources for Further Research"). Despite its usefulness, however, the content may become quickly outdated. Summing Up: Recommended.
