Brush (Univ. of California, Davis) is one of the leading authorities on farm conservation of genes. His multiauthored compilation represents the first effort to combine the broad array of research associated with on-farm conservation of crop diversity, and is particularly relevant after the recent International Convention on Biological Diversity gave prominence to in situ efforts to conserve germ plasm. Individual chapters are written by a number of prominent sociologists, economists, ecologists, and evolutionary biologists. Topics covered include the genetic structure of crop land races, the dynamic flux between natural and human directed selection, indigenous forms of seed management and the maintenance of genetic diversity, policy and institutional issues, and intellectual property rights. As with all multiauthored texts, there is some overlap between chapters, but each contribution is generally well written and comprehensive. Of particular note are a number of case histories of crop conservation in Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, and the Peruvian Andes, where scientists and government officials have developed large-scale plans to conserve crop diversity in conjunction with local farmers.
