A Practical System of Modern Domestic Cookery And Family Management; containing a compendium of French cookery, and of fashionable confectionary, preparations for invalids and convalescents, a selection of cheap dishes, and numerous useful miscellaneous receipts in the various branches of domestic economy. Margaret Dods was the landlady of the Cleikum Inn in Sir Walter Scott's novel "St. Ronan's Well". The author's real name was Christina Jane Johnstone. First published in 1826, her book went into 11 editions. The excellent recipes are full of interest and the author's style is vigorous and forthright. An enjoyable excursion into Scottish 19th century cookery.
