About the authors BOB DICKINSON is President of Carnival Cruise Lines and a Director of the Carnival Corporation, which operates Holland America Line-West Tours, Windstar Cruises, and Seabourn Cruise Line. A twenty-four-year veteran of the cruise industry, he has been described as "the man responsible for bringing those passenger hoards flocking on board the company's hulls." In 1996, the editors of Tour and Travel News listed Bob Dickinson among the Top 25 Most Influential Executives in the Retail Travel Industry. ANDY VLADIMIR is an internationally recognized marketing consultant with a distinguished track record in the advertising industry. He is a former Director of Tourism for the Government of Bermuda, a widely respected travel and business writer, and a tenured professor at Florida International University's School of Hospitality Management, where he teaches a course on cruise line management.

Booklist Review

Information about the travel industry is difficult to come by, in part because it is made up of so many types and sizes of enterprises and in part because, among publishers and librarians, interest is in the travel aspect, not the industry aspect. These two books are important to any library building holdings on the travel business. Dickinson and Vladimir profile the growth of steamship transportation as a leisure travel business. Their account is anecdotal and sometimes lacks focus but provides valuable insight into the management structure, marketing practices, and competitive nature of the vacation cruise industry. Krotz looks at how travel has evolved into tourism and leisure activity, but he is also concerned about tourism's impact on the environment and indigenous cultures. He argues that tourists are destroying the very attractions they seek to visit and that they distort local economies by making them "tourism dependent." He reports from a variety of locales and offers suggestions on ways tourism can be made responsible. --David Rouse

While not as impressive as transatlantic crossings on the great black-hulled ocean liners must have been, the smaller, slower cruise ships now provide the closest thing to seafaring adventure for the middle class. In this authoritative work, Dickinson, the president of Carnival Cruise Lines, and travel industry expert Vladimir (The Complete Travel Marketing Handbook, NTC Pub., 1992) offer an overview of the industry along with their business philosophy. They begin with an interesting history of oceangoing passenger vessels. Primordial cruises of the 19th century included passengers such as Mark Twain, who noted the mighty appeal of cruises to travelers between the ages of 40 and 70. The authors then turn to a thorough but numbing discussion of marketing strategies to ensure that no berth go unfilled. And yes, no book on cruising would be complete without mentioning the television show that benefited "every cruise ship afloat"The Love Boatas the authors bring on actor Gavin MacLeod (Captain Stubing) to say some nice things about the industry.
