That the majority of entrepreneurial ventures fail is widely known. That many who fail succumb to the challenges while trying to grow a business is largely unrecognized. Hess (Darden Graduate School of Business, Univ. of Virginia) seeks to make entrepreneurs aware of this in his new book. The author's central theme is that growth is change. This is an original and insightful perspective. Grow to Greatness is a guidebook to the process of change and the pitfalls that accompany change during business expansion. The book begins with a homey "Hello, I am Ed Hess" and continues much like a chat with an experienced professor/entrepreneur about what works and what to watch for. The work is based on a study of 54 growth companies, but the author's considerable experience and insights from prior books add wisdom. Hess takes a comprehensive view of growth, starting with whether or not to grow. Over ten chapters, he covers the essentials of growing and changing a business: how to grow, planning for growth, leading during growth, the entrepreneur's personal growth, and developing a management team.
