Hoerr does a superlative job in not only writing about the art of school leadership but also modeling it in his writing style. It is energetic, engaging, credible, hopeful--all that is real leadership. His focus is New City School, a private, independent school where he has served as principal for many years. The author touches upon critical areas of school leadership: collaboration, goal setting, teacher growth, promoting creativity, and partnering with parents. He does so with terrific examples and stresses the point that strong leaders understand that leadership is about relationships. Readers will find examples of ways to rethink how they currently do business. In chapters such as "Wielding Power" and "Celebrating Our Differences," Hoerr outlines unique and doable problem-solving strategies. Indeed, he raises questions throughout but they serve to prod readers to step back, reflect upon current practice, debate, reexamine, and proceed with new insight, energy, and courage.
