Impacting every aspect of the US's criminal justice system, the war on drugs is a subject of much debate when discussing criminal justice reform. One important innovation in the US's approach to dealing with the manufacturing, distribution, possession, use, and abuse of illicit drugs is the development of drug courts and therapeutic communities. Kaye (sociology, Wesleyan Univ.) provides a thorough ethnographic examination of these drug courts and privatized therapeutic communities. He explores how drug courts have redefined what constitutes "addiction" and looks at the role therapeutic communities play in delivering drug treatment services to individuals. It is noteworthy that Kaye not only critiques the reasoning and use of drug courts within the contemporary US criminal justice system, but also provides suggestions for future policy considerations. This practical, political, and theoretical examination of drug courts and therapeutic communities could serve as a reference for research or as supplemental reading for coursework in criminology and criminal justice, and it will support sociology, political science, social work, or criminology and criminal justice programs. The book is informative, engrossing, and well written. Chapter notes provide additional information, and the rest of the scholarly apparatus is excellent. Summing Up: Highly recommended.
