This examination of the interrelationship among men, managers, and masculinities integrates insights from many fields. The contributors and cases come mainly from the UK, but the US, Australia, and Western Europe are also represented. Several papers analyze entrepreneurial activity and others bureaucratic organizations including universities. All settings yield similar insights. Research shows that managers in industrial societies have been men, and the stereotype of the good manager has had "masculine" characteristics. The main contribution of this collection is its focus on the range of masculinities in the context of management. Just as women do not fit the male managerial model, neither do all men. People of diverse masculinities should be able to influence organizations. The authors provide historical background, and the UK details add to the familiar US picture. Contributors also describe current work environments and suggest that management practices be reconsidered because they are unfair to women and many men, and because they can become more effective by being more inclusive. The language is academic with considerable discipline-specific jargon that may discourage the general reader who could benefit from the information.
