Susan Eva Eckstein is Professor of Sociology at Boston University and former president of the Latin American Studies Association. She is the author of Back from the Future: Cuba under Castro (1994). Timothy P. Wickham-Crowley is Associate Professor of Sociology at Georgetown University and former program chair of the Latin American Studies Association. He is the author of Guerrillas and Revolution in Latin America: A Comparative Study of Insurgents and Regimes since 1956 (1992). Together they edited Struggles for Social Rights in Latin America (2002).

Choice Review

This slightly unwieldy volume offers a rewarding consideration of fundamental issues in contemporary Latin America. The editors organized an international congress of the Latin American Studies Association, and these articles from different disciplines--especially political science, sociology, and anthropology--reflect the meeting's range and quality. The eclectic compilation includes theory-driven essays, specific case studies, and wide-ranging thematic essays. Among the topics considered are a theoretical consideration of social justice and citizenship, the Chilean judiciary, Colombian violence, confessions from Argentina's Dirty War, a wide-ranging assessment of contemporary indigenous political movements, and essays dealing with Brazil, Chiapas, and Peru. The book places the inequities that define the lives of hundreds of millions of Latin Americans at the center of the discussion. The lack of an essay keying on some aspect of the life experience of Afro-Latin Americans is an unfortunate omission in such a broad collection, but overall the book succeeds in using scholarship to consider the too often neglected topic of social justice. ^BSumming Up: Recommended.
