This collection of 18 essays, most of which have been previously published, focuses on the black experience in the Appalachian South during the 19th century. Topics include slavery, banjo playing, mining, railroading, cotton farming, travelers in the Upland South, education, mountain Republicans and blacks, and violence. Several of the most prolific Appalachian scholars, such as Richard Drake, Inscoe, Gordon McKinney, and Ronald L. Lewis, to mention but a few, are represented here along with several less widely known scholars. Taken together these contributions demonstrate the diversity found in Appalachian history. Because relatively little work has been done on racial matters in Appalachia, this is necessarily an introductory volume. The two most delightful articles are the only two that deal primarily with specific individuals; Charles Dew writes about Sam Williams, foreman in Buffalo Forge, Virginia, and Marie Tedesco discusses Adam Waterford, a free black slave owner. There is one major factual error: the American Folklore Society was founded in 1888 rather than in 1889 as stated. Nonetheless this is an important anthology. Academic collections. W. K.
