The Architecture of Change: Building a Better World is a collection of articles that demonstrates the power of the human spirit to transform the environments in which we live. This inspiring book profiles people who refused to accept that things couldn't change, who saw the possibility of making something better, and didn't esitate to act.

Breaking down the stereotypes surrounding "socially engaged architecture," this book shows who can actually impact the lives of communities. Like Bernard Rudofsky's seminal Architecture Without Architects, it explores communal architecture produced not by specialists but by people, drawing on their common lives and experiences, who have a unique insight into their particular needs and environments. These unsung heroes are teachers and artists, immigrants and activists, grandmothers in the projects, students and planners, architects and residents of some of our poorest places. Running through their stories is a constant theme of social justice as an underlying principle of the built environment. This book is about opening one's eyes to new ways of interpreting the world, and how to go about changing it.

For a decade, journalist-civic activist Kingsley Hammett, who died in 2008, published a "little" magazine (founded in 1998) called DESIGNER/builder. It featured well-written, accessible columns (many by Hammett, and many biographical) devoted to what he called "real" (grassroots) urban planning that resisted the blandishments of corporate developers and gentrifiers. In this volume, Hammett's wife, Jerilou, and friend, New York writer-photographer-activist Wrigley, have collected a selection of writings, mainly Kingsley's, that appeared in DESIGNER/builder (1999-2008). The articles explore cases of "bottom-up" planning and design, including services for the aging, in places such as New York City, Washington, DC, Baltimore, Kenya, and Afghanistan. Collectively, the articles convey the message that ordinary people, young and old, despite obstacles (mainly poverty), can effectively design neighborhoods, build houses and playgrounds, and in other ways shape sustainable communities. Focused on the importance of place, the book resonates arguments made by historian Dolores Hayden in her The Power of Place: Urban Landscapes as Public History (CH, Oct'95, 33-1129). The book's narrow chronological framework (1999-2008) begs a longer opening chapter to provide context.
