Coppa's scholarly review of the literature that is still swirling around the issue of how religious anti-Judaism developed over the centuries and then merged with racial anti-semitism is a welcome addition to the ongoing conversations between Christians and Jews. Equally valuable is his exhaustive treatment of how popes over the centuries have in diverse ways related the Catholic Church to Judaism. Without such a longitudinal and contextual analysis, the place of Pius XII in the study of Catholic Church history would be incomprehensible. As a prudent man consumed with the possibility of shaping diplomatic solutions to the problems posed by Hitler, Pius seemed to lack the confidence in his own religious faith to address the diabolical policies of the Nazis. The book's last two chapters explicate how the contributions of John XXIII and the post-Vatican II popes and other church leaders initiated diplomatic relationships with the state of Israel and helped construct a fruitful Jewish-Christian relationship that can resonate with the charism at the base of both traditions.
