This book develops the best traditions of this kind of scientific literature. Written by working theoretical physicists who are at the same time dedicated popularizers of scientific knowledge, the book is clear and captivating in style. It brings to the reader the latest achievements of quantum solid-state physics; but on the way it shows how the laws of physics reveal themselves even in trivial (at first sight) episodes and natural phenomena around us. And what is most important, it portrays the world through the eyes of scientists, "proving the harmony by algebra".

Choice Review

Aslamazov (late, Moscow Technological Univ.) and Varlamov (Moscow Technological Univ.) have prepared an engaging look at a variety of real-world phenomena and the physics behind them. It includes three major sections: "Outdoor Physics" discusses meanders of rivers and streams, oceanic acoustic wave guides, Foucault's pendulum, and tidal slowing; "Saturday Night Physics" considers violins, soap bubbles, boiling water, wave propagation, and microwaves; and "Windows to the Microworld" contains three chapters on superconductivity. The book is a translation from the Russian; many references are obscure for non-Russian readers. The style is colloquial and entertaining, but there are some rough spots in the translation and readers will need to be patient with some of the awkward grammar and phrasing. The physics, however, is very solid and well explained (though the quality of the printing of many the photos and some of the illustrations leaves much to be desired). The book is pitched to upper-division undergraduates with a solid grounding in mathematics and physics. It will also interest graduate students and practitioners. R. A.
