Professor Stephen Ball EdD, MPhil, BSc (Hons), FIH, FHEA
Stephen Ball is Head of the Centre for International Hospitality Management Research (CIHMR) and Professor of Hospitality Management at Sheffield Hallam University. He is Chair of the Council for Hospitality Management Education (CHME), the subject body for hospitality management in the UK, and Visiting Fellow at two other UK universities.
Havinggraduated with a BSc in Geography from Manchester University Stephen went on to successfully complete an Advanced Postgraduate Diploma in Hotel and Catering Administration at Manchester Metropolitan University. He had previously worked in the brewing industry, retailing and pub retailing industries and the hotel industry. He has also worked in National Health Service Catering Management in two London hospitals.
He commenced lecturing in higher education in 1982. He has a wealth of experience in university school quality management, subject group leadership, course leadership, external examining, curriculum design and hospitality teaching from HND to postgraduate levelboth in theUKand abroad.In his career in higher education he has supervised and examined research students, authored or edited five books (including Hospitality Operations: a Systems Approach, Food Supply Chain Management: Issues for the Hospitality and Retail Sectors and Fast Food Operations and Their Management), written numerous articles, book chapters, reports and keynote presentations. He co-researched three editions of the British Hospitality Association''s annual British Hospitality: Trendsand Statistics and co-authored ''A Review of Hospitality Management Education in the UK'' for CHME.
He has presented conference papers on many topics related to hospitality management, ranging from the use of humour in hospitality to branding in hotels, in the UK, Canada, Croatia, Iceland, Finland and Palestine and has taught in Hong Kong and Singapore on Hospitality and Tourism masters and undergraduate distance learning courses. He has also undertaken academic work in many other countries including China, New Zealand, Switzerland, Dubai, Germany and USA. He has produced distance learning materials for worldwide use and has acted as consultant, and designed and delivered executive development programmes, for a number of UK and international hospitality organisations including Holiday Inns, Bass Taverns and Sodexho. He has an MPhil on productivity management in fast-food chains which focussed upon a case study of Wimpy International. His Doctorate was based on researchleadership in Universities. He has organised conferences and seminars including the 12th annual CHME research conference for which he also edited the proceedings.
He is a member of the Editorial Board for the journal Tourism & Hospitality Research and of the Editorial Advisory Board for the Journal of Hospitality, Leisure, Sport and Tourism Education (JoHLSTE). His current teaching, research and writing interests relate to hospitality and tourism business development and entrepreneurship, productivity and operations management, leadership andhigher education.
Dr. Susan Horner EdD, MBA, BSc, FIH
Susan Horner is the Postgraduate Programme Leader for Hospitality and Tourism and International Co-ordinator with a special focus on India at Sheffield Hallam University. Her academic specialisms are Consumer Behaviour and Marketing in the Hospitality and Tourism sectors. She teaches marketing and marketing communications to undergraduate and postgraduate students and supervises doctoral level students both at the University and in Hong Kong.
Before entering academia Susan worked for Unilever both in the UK and abroad developing and marketing food and catering products across the world. Since joining the University Susan has completed a number of major consultancy projects in a wide variety of hospitality and tourism organisations in areas such as marketing, staff recruitment, development and training, and catering provision.
As part of her work Susan has travelled widely in both India and China. At present she spends a great deal of time travelling to India on behalf of the University. She has developed courses in India in collaboration with Indian Universities and carried out joint research and publication with academics in India. She has advised students, colleges and Universities in India on educational and employment issues and has worked extensively with a wide rangeofagencies. She has also given public lectures in both India and China on the hospitality and tourism industries.
Susan is an active researcher and has published articles, papers, books and conference presentations. She has published a wide range of books which have been translated into Chinese including Consumer Behaviour in Tourism, Business Travel and Tourism, International Cases in Tourism Management and Leisure Marketing.
Susan is also a visiting Professor at the University of Girona and Escola Universitaria De Turisme in Barcelona, Spain. She is a founder member of the Centre for International Hospitality Management Research at Sheffield Hallam University.
Dr. Kevin Nield EdD, MSc, BA, PGCE, FHEA, FIH
Kevin Nield is a Teaching Fellow and Faculty Learning, Teaching and Assessment Co-ordinator in the Faculty of Organisation and Management, Sheffield Hallam University. His teaching specialisms are International Hospitality Management and Quality Management.
Before entering academia Kevin had worked in a variety of positions and for a number of organisations within the retail and hospitality industries. Since joining the University he has carried out a number of consultancies for organisations within the hospitality and tourism industries on matters as diverse as tourism satisfaction on the Black Sea, staff development and catering provision.
As part of his work Kevin has travelled widely in both India and China. At present he spends more time in China, travelling to China at least four times a year. He has been responsible for setting up and providing degree courses for hospitality and tourism students in Hong Kong. Within China he has advised students, colleges and universities on educational and employment opportunities in the UK and China. He has given public lectures in China on the hospitality and tourism industries and employability.
Kevin is an active researcher and has published in excess of over 70 articles, papers, books and conference presentations. His main research interests are the Chinese learner (the subject of his doctoral thesis) and customer and tourist satisfaction. He is currently working with the Rhodes Hotel Association on a longitudinal study of tourism satisfaction on the island and is a co-director of two FDTL-funded projects concerned with graduate employability and staff support.
Kevin is the director of the Centre for Pedagogic Innovation and Research and is founder member of the Centre for International Hospitality Management Research.
