It is estimated that more than 50 million Latinos live in the United States. This is projected to more than double by 2050. WILLIAM VEGA is a professor of family medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, director of the Luskin Center for Innovation, and codirector of the Multicultural Research Network on Health and Health Care.

Relatively little is known about the health issues affecting Latino males, and the risks that can contribute to a compromised health status for this group. This volume helps address this information gap by contributing to a better understanding of the subject. The editors, who are Latino and experts from the multidisciplinary fields of public health, medicine, and sociology, provide a valuable framework to study these issues, and offer insights into the health risks and opportunities facing Latino men. This is an important work because this population is expected to double in the next 40 years, and Latino men will play an increasingly dominant role in US society. The book is divided into two parts. Part 1 provides an overview of key health issues affecting Latino men. Part 2 takes a life cycle approach in examining the group. Contributors discuss sexual and reproductive health; alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs; incarceration; chronic diseases; mental health; HIV/AIDS; and health coverage. A final chapter recommends research, programs, and policies to address many of the social and structural inequalities affecting Latino males. This is an informative, data-driven volume for students and health professionals with an interest in Latino male health. Summing Up: Highly recommended.
