Now in its second edition, this dictionary continues to be compiled and edited by the International Food Information Service, the UK-based publisher of the Web site Food Science Central (CH, Nov'06, 44-1277) and the Food Science and Technology Abstracts (FSTA) database. The first edition was originally created from the companion thesaurus to the FSTA database, a concept that also applies to the second edition. The preface states that "750 brand new terms have been defined" for this edition, with an emphasis on nutrition and health topics. The definitions range from a few words to a lengthy paragraph. Some of the new definitions are for beauty foods (beverages or supplements intended to provide beauty benefits), kitten milk (commercially available milk for kittens), parottas (unleavened bread eaten in South India), and sports nutrition (all aspects of nutrition that relate specifically to those involved in sports). Within each definition, boldface words are cross-referenced to other definitions. Aside from the additional definitions, the format, content, and appendixes remain the same as in the first edition.
