Resumen
In this blistering memoir of his life in the baking business, Dean Brettschneider describes his journey from a small town baker's apprentice to Global Baker and the internationally successful entrepreneur he is today. Make no mistake -- this is not a book about baking. As we follow the interwoven arcs of Dean's career and personal life, his experience teaches us practical lessons on how to harness our passion to strategically improve ourselves and advance our careers. His revelations on entrepreneurship -- most notably how he founded Baker & Cook and transformed it from a neighbourhood bakery into a multi-national money-spinner in a matter of years -- give us a first row view of what goes into building a business from the ground up, including all of the pain and sacrifice that comes with it. Told in a refreshingly frank manner, Dean's story is sometimes shockingly direct, often hilarious, and always enlightening, leaving us with valuable astute insights into how to navigate the trials and tribulations of life in business.

Resumen
With the rise in data science development, we now have many remarkable techniques and tools to extend data analysis from numeric and categorical data to textual data. Sifting through the open-ended responses from a survey, for example, was an arduous process when performed by hand. Using a case study approach, this book was written for business analysts who wish to increase their skills in extracting answers for text data in order to support business decision making. Most of the exercises use Excel, today's most common analysis tool, and R, a popular analytic computer environment. The techniques covered range from the most basic text analytics, such as key word analysis, to more sophisticated techniques, such as topic extraction and text similarity scoring. Companion files with numerous datasets are included for use with case studies and exercises. FEATURES: Organized by tool or technique, with the basic techniques presented first and the more sophisticated techniques presented laterUses Excel and R for datasets in case studies and exercisesFeatures the CRISP-DM data mining standard with early chapters for conducting the preparatory steps in data miningCompanion files with numerous datasets and figures from the text. The companion files are available online by emailing the publisher with proof of purchase at info@merclearning.com.

Resumen
Catastrophic failure is all around us. From the disastrous Post Office software, which led to a multimillion-pound lawsuit, to the mix-up at the 2017 Oscars Awards ceremony, these errors are the unfortunate ramifications of our dizzyingly advancing world. But what causes such ruinous mistakes? And can we do anything about them? In Meltdown, world-leading experts in disaster prevention, Chris Clearfield and Andras Tilcsik, use real-life examples from around the world to reveal the errors in thinking, perception, and system design that lie behind both our everyday errors and disasters like the Fukushima nuclear accident. But most crucially, Meltdown is about finding solutions. It reveals why ugly designs make us safer, how a five-minute exercise can prevent billion-dollar catastrophes, why teams with fewer experts are better at managing risk, and why diversity is one of our best safeguards against failure. The result is an eye-opening and empowering book - one that will change the way you see our complex world and your own place in it.

Resumen
Examples of the value that can be created and captured through crowdsourcing go back to at least 1714 when the UK used crowdsourcing to solve the Longitude Problem, obtaining a solution that would enable the UK to become the dominant maritime force of its time. Today, Wikipedia uses crowds to provide entries for the world's largest and free encyclopedia. Partly fuelled by the value that can be created and captured through crowdsourcing, interest in researching the phenomenon has been remarkable. Despite this - or perhaps because of it - research into crowdsourcing has been conducted in different research silos, within the fields of management (from strategy to finance to operations to information systems), biology, communications, computer science, economics, political science, among others.

Resumen
"This book addresses why, despite decades of attempted reform, the Pentagon continues to struggle to reduce waste and inefficiency. Peter Levine narrates the history of attempted reforms through three case studies in civilian personnel, acquisition, and financial management in the Department of Defense. The result is a clear understanding of what went wrong in the past and a set of concrete guidelines to plot a better future."--
