The recent economic crisis, and the challenges to democracy in an increasingly globalized world, brings into sharp relief the importance of mass communication. This volume explores a range of issues, from the nature of communication, to the role of the media industry, to the way that mass communication has facilitated social movements in many parts of the world. Revisiting the works of Karl Marx and others, the essays bring a new perspective and a renewed interest in critical analyses of communication practices globally. This collection represents the cutting edge of communication research introducing a new generation of scholars to understanding changes in the way we learn about our society.

This volume includes some significant case studies of the political economy of mass media, new media platforms, and their relationship to politics and culture along with some more generalized interpretations of modern technology from a "leftist" perspective. As Mandy Tröger explains in the epilogue, "'The Left' is a social construct. It ... signifies a potential space for identity which in itself is fragmented. Such labels, therefore, are illuminating our understanding of social reality only in that they simplify its complexity." Indeed, the chapters in this book do not all express the same vision of current media, technological, political, and cultural conditions. This reviewer appreciated most the chapters that were grounded in rigorous research and offered some of the most nuanced interpretations of current conditions, i.e., Oliver Boyd-Barrett's "The Evolving Business Models of Network News?" and Douglas Kellner's "Media Spectacle and the North African Arab Uprisings: Some Critical Reflections." The book would have benefited from better proofreading and a greater diversity of contributors--especially more women. Summing Up: Recommended. With reservations.
