Yet, behind each glass of beer there is an enormous amount of work invested. If the first image that comes to your mind is the lifting of heavy bags of malt or carrying kegs, guess again! Most of the work involved in brewing is carried out by "microworkers" - yeast and their enzymes! These special helpers are responsible for catalyzing the vast majority of the biochemical reactions occurring in all steps that gradually transform the sugary wort into beer. This book not only provides readers with an overview of the whole biochemical process involved in beer fermentation, but also reviews the latest findings in this delightful field, making it essential reading for both scientists and brewing enthusiasts.
Format: Electronic Resources
Breweriana : American Beer Collectibles. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:289473 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z by Kious, Kevin.
Call Number 663.42075
Publication Date 2012
Format: Electronic Resources
Beer Lover's Washington. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:287486 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z by Thompson, Logan.
Call Number 917
Publication Date 2013
Summary Beer Lover's Washington features breweries, brewpubs and beer bars geared toward hop heads looking to seek out the best beers--from bitter seasonal IPAs to rich, dark stouts--Washington has to offer. From a beverage of warriors to a cheap and affordable commodity, beer has been a part of our consumption for nearly 8000 years. Like most alcoholic drinks it has been prone to abuse and in some counties the per capita consumption of beer has led to considerable health risks. However, just as wine in moderation has been proposed to promote health, research is showing that beer -- and the ingredients in beer -- can have similar impact on improving health, and in some instances preventing disease. For example, some cancers like bladder cancers and the incidence of cardiovascular disease are reported to be lower in moderate beer drinkers. Furthermore there is a considerable body of emerging evidence to show that the anti-oxidant capacity of beers is high. It has been argued by some that the total antioxidants ingested in some beer drinkers equates that consumed by red wine drinkers. The key to this, of course, is understanding and this volume presents a collection of the most current writings on the subject of beer and it's potential in health. Winner of the 2009 Best Drinks and Health Book in the World - Gourmand World Cookbook Awards *The most comprehensive coverage of the broad range of topics related to the role of beer and beer ingredients in health *Addresses the impact of beer and beer ingredients on cancers, cardiovascular disease, anti-oxidant benefits, and other health related concerns Presents a holistic view from beer brewing to the isolation of beer-related compounds. *Appropriate for scientists and researchers from a variety of fields and industries from beer production to health-care professionals *Consistent organization of each chapter provides easy-access to key points and summaries *Self-contained chapters written by subject matter experts.
Format: Electronic Resources
Talking heads [digital videorecording] : Maggie Beer. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:24597 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z by ABC-TV (Australia).
Call Number TR DVD 641.5092 BEE
Publication Date 2006
Summary She watched her parents build a business, and then saw it collapse, with them losing everything. In fact women were the first brewers since one of their primary responsibilities involved cooking. Years ago beer was considered a food as well as a drink. Beer provided many of the calories needed for one's daily diet. Dating back all the way to the fifth millennium BC, beer was recorded by the ancient Egyptian scribes, who also created an extra hieroglyph specifically for "brewer." Historians tell us that beer was used as a method to compensate laborers who were building the pyramids. Canada's microbrewing movement began in British Columbia with the founding of Horseshoe Bay Brewing in 1982. Three decades later, B.C. is home to more than fifty breweries, including a dozen brewpubs. Beer tourists are coming in droves, and private liquor stores are selling exclusive bottles of beer at prices previously reserved only for fine wine. With profiles of each of B.C.'s craft breweries, as well as maps, tasting tours and an insider's look at the people behind the kegs and casks, Craft Beer Revolution is the definitive guide to British Columbia's booming craft beer scene, from the movement's early founders still thriving today-Spinnakers, Granville Island and Vancouver Island-to the current industry leaders-Central City, Howe Sound and Driftwood-as well as the most remote-Tofino Brewing, Townsite in Powell River, and Plan B in Smithers. Each brewery has a tale to tell, and Joe Wiebe, the Thirsty Writer, has heard them all. B.C.'s leading beer writer, he has spent the last decade travelling throughout the province, sampling craft beer wherever he can find it. His irreverent guide will be an indispensable companion for beer nerd and novice alike.
Format: Electronic Resources
The Chemistry of Beer [electronic resource] : The Science in the Suds ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:149729 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z by Barth, Roger.
Call Number 641.623
Publication Date 2013
Summary Discover the science of beer and beer making Ever wondered just how grain and water are transformed into an effervescent, alcoholic beverage? Based on FBI files, legal documents, old newspapers and other sources, it offers a coast-to-coast survey of Volstead crime--outrageous stories of America's most notorious liquor lords, including Al Capone and Dutch Schultz. Readers will find the lesser known Volstead outlaws to be as fascinating as their more famous counterparts. The riveting tales of Max Hassel, Waxy Gordon, Roy Olmstead, the Purple Gang, the Havre Bunch, and the Capitol Hill Bootlegger will be new to most readers. Likewise, the exploits of women bootleggers and flying bootleggers are unknown to most Americans. Books about Prohibition usually note that Canadian liquor exporters abetted the U.S. bootleggers, but they fail to go into detail. This defined approach is tantamount to placing three wheels on a car and expecting it to drive smoothly. It cannot be operated without the balance that a fourth one provides, and that required wheel is culture. In the modern era of globalization, managers venturing forth to engage alien societies must be armed with cross-cultural skill sets lest they travel on feet of clay. Most academic texts and encased individual chapters targeting business students are awash with a confusing maze of intersecting theoretical-based value determinants to define and characterize cultural differences. On the other side of the culture subject are multitudes of guidebooks for executives led by the popular series Kiss, Bow or Shake Hands highlighting disparities as one does business in countless singular societies around the world. Both approaches center on memorizing collections of applied principles and/or factual orientations. A more concise, simple, and practical approach is required that cuts through the complicated cultural matrix.
Format: Electronic Resources
Boutique beer : 500 of the world's finest craft brews / Ben McFarland. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:290430 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z by McFarland, Ben, author.
Call Number 641.23 MCF
Publication Date 2013
Summary Ben McFarland's in-depth knowledge and extensive travels means his beer hunter's antennae is perfectly primed to seek out the brews, the brewers and the insider knowledge that inform the world's finest premium ales.
Format: Books
Sustainable Homebrewing [electronic resource] : An All-Organic Approach to Crafting Great Beer ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:156332 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z by Loftus, Amelia Slayton.
Call Number 641.23
Publication Date 2014
Format: Electronic Resources
The Book of Hops : A Craft Beer Lover's Guide to Hoppiness. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:305665 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z by DiSorbo, Dan.
Call Number 663.42
Publication Date 2022
Format: Electronic Resources
Brew It Yourself : Make Your Own Beer, Wine, Cider and Other Concoctions. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:295169 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z by Hood, Richard.
Call Number 641.23
Publication Date 2015
Format: Electronic Resources
Beer ft Balter Brewing Company : Process of Brewing Beer: Overview [electronic resource] ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:304253 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z by ClickView (Firm)
Call Number XX(304253.1)
Summary In this clip, we simplify the brewing process into a quick 4 minute overview.
Format: Other
ClickView Player
Beer ft Balter Brewing Company : The Coldroom And Keg System [electronic resource] ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:304261 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z by ClickView (Firm)
Call Number XX(304261.1)
Summary This video explains the way a coldroom and a keg system works as well as teaching you how to tap a keg.
Format: Other
ClickView Player
Beer ft Balter Brewing Company : Process of Brewing Beer: Detailed [electronic resource] ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:304317 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z by ClickView (Firm)
Call Number XX(304317.1)
Summary The following video deep dives in to the process of brewing beer.
Format: Other
ClickView Player
Instant Pot Magic : 50 Surprising Recipes for Beer, Jam, Bread, and More! ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:306951 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z by Murphy, David.
Call Number 794.8
Publication Date 2019
Format: Electronic Resources
Chicago Beer : A History of Brewing, Public Drinking and the Corner Bar. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:312172 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z by Sawyers, June Skinner.
Call Number 663.3
Publication Date 2022
Format: Electronic Resources
Home made country wines : beer, mead and metheglin / compiled by Dorothy Wise ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:295884 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z Call Number ARC 641.872 HOM
Publication Date 1963
Format: Books
150 Great Australian Beers [electronic resource] : Your guide to craft beer and beyond ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:127695 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z by Smith, James.
Call Number 641.230994
Publication Date 2014
Summary Do you know your porters from your pales and your stouts from your saisons? Today, the market is going even smaller--with tiny, independent brewers setting up shop in neighborhood brew houses nationwide, focusing on crafting unique, flavorful brews specifically for their extremely local clientele. The reality is that beer is in the midst of a renaissance in this country, driven by a new class of these dedicated craft "nanobrewers" and growing communities of drinkers looking for something more from their daily brew--something higher-quality, more unique, more local. These microbrewers rent out small spaces or buy industrial equipment to install in their garages. They're accountants, middle-school teachers, and plumbers who are passionate about beer and who dedicate their free time to producing three or so barrels of their own brew at a time. They sell their bottles to close friends and gift it to family members for birthdays and holidays. They enjoy what they do and they're proud of their product. What's it like inside these small-time brewing operations? What happens behind the scenes? What goes into making high-end craft beer on a small scale? True Beer takes an on-the-ground look at the ultra-small side of the craft brewing movement from the inside out by profiling a number of independent American breweries in detail and using that as a jumping-off point to examine the art and science of brewing, the local farmers and providers behind the scenes, the market itself as well as national trends in nanobrewing, and modern craft beer production. Its rise was dependent not only on technological innovations and faster supply chains, but also on the increased connectedness of the world and the political and economic structures of empire. Drawing upon a wide range of archival sources from Europe, the Americas, and Sub-Saharan Africa, this study traces the spread of industrial beer brewing in Europe from the late 18th to the early 20th century to show how a single beer style became the global favourite through advances in science, business and imperial power. In highlighting the evolution of consumer tastes through changing hierarchical relationships between the British metropole and colonies, as well as the evolution of business organizations and practices, Globalization in a Glass contributes to ongoing debates about globalization, empire, and trade. It argues that, despite the might and power of the British Empire as a colonizing force, the effects of globalization, imperial trade networks, and colonial migration led to the domination of the most popular Continental European style of beer, the Pilsner, over British-style ales.
Format: Electronic Resources
Dave Miller's homebrewing guide : everything you need to know to make great-tasting beer / Dave Miller. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:158150 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z by Miller, David G., 1945-
Call Number 641.873 20
Publication Date 1995
Summary Up-to-date advice on the latest techniques and brewing process from how beer is made to the fermentation process through to bottling the finished beer.
Format: Books
Table of contents only http://www.loc.gov/catdir/enhancements/fy0714/95013385-t.html
American girls, beer, and Glenn Miller [electronic resource] : GI morale in World War II / James J. Marshall, the new Army Chief of Staff, had to acknowledge that American society - and the citizens who would soon become soldiers - had drastically changed in the previous few decades. Almost every home had a radio, movies could talk, and driving in an automobile to the neighborhood soda fountain was part of everyday life. A product of newly created mass consumerism, the soldier of 1940 had expectations of material comfort, even while at war. Historian James J. Cooke presents the first comprehensive look at how Marshall's efforts to cheer soldiers far from home resulted in the enduring morale services that the Army provides still today. Marshall understood that civilian soldiers provided particular challenges and wanted to improve the subpar morale services that had been provided to Great War doughboys. Frederick Osborn, a civilian intellectual, was called to head the newly formed morale branch, which quickly became the Special Services Division. Hundreds of on-post movie theaters showing first-run movies at reduced prices, service clubs where GIs could relax, and inexpensive cafeterias were constructed. The Army Exchange System took direction under Brigadier General Joseph Byron, offering comfort items at low prices; the PX sold everything from cigarettes and razor blades to low-alcohol beer in very popular beer halls. The great civic organizations - the YMCA, the Salvation Army, the Jewish Welfare Board, and others - were brought together to form the United Service Organizations (USO). At USO Camp Shows, admired entertainers like Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, and Frances Langford brought home-style entertainment to soldiers within the war zones. As the war heightened in intensity, the Special Service Companies grew to over forty in number, each containing more than one hundred enlisted men. Trained in infantry skills, soldiers in the companies at times would have to stop showing movies, pick up their rifles, and fight. The Special Services Division, PX, and USO were crucial elements in maintaining GI morale, and Cooke's work makes clear the lasting legacy of these efforts to boost the average soldier's spirits almost a century ago. The idea that as American soldiers serve abroad, they should have access to at least some of the comforts of home has become a cultural standard. -- Book jacket.
Format: Electronic Resources
Singing out [electronic resource] : an oral history of America's folk music revivals / David King Dunaway, Molly Beer. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:240157 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z by Dunaway, David King.
Call Number 781.6213009 22
Publication Date 2010
Summary Intimate, anecdotal, and spell-binding, Singing Out offers a fascinating oral history of the North American folk music revivals and folk music. Keg Bottle Can presents 150 Australian brews, organised by beer-drinking occasion: from the refreshing after-work beverage to beers that challenge your perception and palate, to art appreciation through beers with well-considered labels. The book includes key information on the beers, as well as the backstory about the brewer and the beer itself, along with food pairings and additional top picks from the brewery. The book opens with a history of craft beer in Australia and describes the brewing process in detail. Rounded off with a useful glossary of beer terminology, it's the perfect tome for all beer lovers. Ultimately, Keg Bottle Can's message is that the beer world is a broad church - and there really is something for everyone. And that while it's fine to drink a beer out of a bottle at a barbecue, if you pair it with food there are nice glasses for it too. Readers will walk away with the confidence and knowledge to do both, rather than feeling bound by hard and fast rules.
Format: Books
Great beers of the world [digital videorecording] Vol. 2. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:30107 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z Call Number DVD 641.23 GRE V2
Publication Date 2006
Format: Books
Great beers of the world [digital videorecording] Vol. 1. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:30106 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z Call Number DVD 641.23 GRE V1
Publication Date 2006
Summary From the historical roots of the beers to the brewing process that make them distinctive." - Container.
Format: Books
The big book of brewing / by Dave Line. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:25444 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z 2024-05-03T08:00:05Z by Line, Dave.
Call Number 641.873 LIN
Publication Date 2006 2004
Format: Books
Alcoholic beverages / edited by G.G.
