Indeed, French is the only language other than English spoken on five continents, and more people still visit France than anywhere else in the world. French fashion continues to dominate haute couture and, at the same time, French people are at the forefront of international "style," which was as true in the first half of the twentieth century as it is today. She shows how revolutionary politics and laws brought about a social revolution within households and created space for thousands of French women and men to reimagine their most intimate relationships. Families negotiated new social practices, including divorce, the reduction of paternal authority, egalitarian inheritance for sons and daughters alike, and the granting of civil rights to illegitimate children. Contrary to arguments that claim the Revolution bound women within a domestic sphere, The Family on Trial maintains that the new civil laws and gender politics offered many women unexpected opportunities to gain power, property, or independence. The family became a political arena, a practical terrain for creating the Republic in day-to-day life. From 1789, citizens across France-sons and daughters, unhappily married spouses and illegitimate children, pamphleteers and moralists, deputies and judges-all disputed how the family should be reformed to remake the new France. They debated how revolutionary ideals and institutions should transform the emotional bonds, gender dynamics, legal customs, and economic arrangements that structured the family. They asked how to bring the principles of liberty, equality, and regeneration into the home. And as French citizens confronted each other in the home, in court, and in print, they gradually negotiated new domestic practices that balanced Old Regime customs with revolutionary innovations in law and culture. In a narrative that combines national-level analysis with a case study of family contestation in Normandy, Desan explores these struggles to bring politics into households and to envision and put into practice a new set of familial relationships.
Format: Electronic Resources
Church and culture in seventeenth-century France / Henry Phillips.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:2149352024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13Zby Phillips, Henry (J. Imagining liberation, and the potential post-Vichy state, lay at the heart of resistance strategy. The development of these ideas, and their transformation into policy at liberation, form the basis of an enquiry that reveals a society which, while split deeply at the political level, found considerable agreement over questions of race, the family and gender. This is explained through a new analysis of republican assimilation which insists that gender was as important a factor as nationality or ethnicity. A new concept of the 'long liberation' provides a framework for understanding the continuing influence of the liberation in post-war France, where scientific planning came to the fore, but whose exponents were profoundly imbued with reductive beliefs about Jews and women that were familiar during Vichy."--Publisher's description. This book takes a new look at France during and after the German occupation. It challenges traditional chronology that concentrates on the Vichy government and punctures standard interpretations that divide occupied France into resisters and collaborators. Throughout, race - specifically Jewishness - and gender are drawn together in original and illuminating ways.
Format: Electronic Resources
Savouring the world vol. 2 [digital videorecording]: Spain & France.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:216702024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13ZCall Number DVD 641.5946 SPA
Publication Date 1999
Summary Visit Spain and France through your tastebuds. From the moment she and her husband Paul, who worked for the USIS, arrived in the fall of 1948, Julia had an awakening that changed her life. Soon this tall, outspoken gal from Pasadena, California, who didn't speak a word of French and knew nothing about the country, was steeped in the language, chatting with purveyors in the local markets, and enrolled in the Cordon Bleu. She teamed up with two fellow gourmettes, Simone Beck and Louisette Bertholle, to help them with a book on French cooking for Americans. Filled with her husband's beautiful black-and-white photographs as well as family snapshots, this memoir is laced with wonderful stories about the French character, particularly in the world of food, and the way of life that Julia embraced so wholeheartedly. In Only Muslim, Naomi Davidson traces this turbulence to the 1920s and 1930s, when North Africans first immigrated to French cities in significant numbers. Drawing on police reports, architectural blueprints, posters, propaganda films, and documentation from metropolitan and colonial officials as well as anticolonial nationalists, she reveals the ways in which French politicians and social scientists created a distinctly French vision of Islam that would inform public policy and political attitudes toward Muslims for the rest of the century-Islam français. French Muslims were cast into a permanent "otherness" that functioned in the same way as racial difference. This notion that one was only and forever Muslim was attributed to all immigrants from North Africa, though in time "Muslim" came to function as a synonym for Algerian, despite the diversity of the North and West African population. Davidson grounds her narrative in the history of the Mosquée de Paris, which was inaugurated in 1926 and epitomized the concept of Islam français. Built in official gratitude to the tens of thousands of Muslim subjects of France who fought and were killed in World War I, the site also provided the state with a means to regulate Muslim life throughout the metropole beginning during the interwar period. Later chapters turn to the consequences of the state's essentialized view of Muslims in the Vichy years and during the Algerian War. Davidson concludes with current debates over plans to build a Muslim cultural institute in the middle of a Parisian immigrant neighborhood, showing how Islam remains today a marker of an unassimilable difference.
Format: Electronic Resources
Eating eternity : food, art and literature in France / John Baxter.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:2804662024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13Zby Baxter, John, author.
Call Number 641.0130944 BAX
Publication Date 2017
Format: Electronic Resources
The expert cook in enlightenment France [electronic resource] / Sean Takats.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:2551392024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13Zby Takats, Sean, 1974-
Call Number 641.5944 22
Publication Date 2011
Format: Electronic Resources
Cuisine et vins de France / Curnonsky ; preface de Pierre Troisgros.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:177902024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13Zby Curnonsky, 1872-1956.
Call Number 641.5944 CUR
Publication Date 1987
Format: Books
Jamie does... This creates frictions in the college admissions process and, if substantial, might ultimately limit student choice. In this paper, we study the introduction of the Common Application (CA) platform, under which students submit a single application to all member schools, potentially reducing frictions and increasing student choice. We first document that joining the CA increases the number of applications received by schools, consistent with reduced frictions. Joining the CA also reduces the yield on accepted students, consistent with increased student choice, and institutions respond to the reduced yield by admitting more students. In line with these findings, we document that the CA has accelerated geographic integration: upon joining, schools attract more foreign students and more out-of-state students, especially from other states with significant CA membership, consistent with network effects. Finally, we find some evidence that joining the CA increases freshmen SAT scores. In this unusually wide-ranging study of representations of Jews in eighteenth-century France--both by Gentiles and Jews themselves--Ronald Schechteroffers fresh perspectives on the Enlightenment and French Revolution, on Jewish history, and on the nature of racism and intolerance. Informed by the latest historical scholarship and by the insights of cultural theory, Obstinate Hebrews is a fascinating tale of cultural appropriation cast in the light of modern society's preoccupation with the "other." Schechter argues that the French paid attention to the Jews because thinking about the Jews helped them reflect on general issues of the day. These included the role of tradition in religion, the perfectibility of human nature, national identity, and the nature of citizenship. In a conclusion comparing and contrasting the "Jewish question" in France with discourses about women, blacks, and Native Americans, Schechter provocatively widens his inquiry, calling for a more historically precise approach to these important questions of difference.
Format: Electronic Resources
Gourmet's France / photographs by Ronny Jaques ; illustrations by Mario Micossi.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:293292024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13Zby Jaques, Ronny
Call Number ARC 647.9544 GOU
Publication Date 1978
Format: Books
The National Front in France : ideology, discourse and power / Peter Davies.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:2207292024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13Zby Davies, Peter, 1966-
Call Number 324.24403 21
Publication Date 1999
Format: Electronic Resources
Dinner in French : My Recipes by Way of France: a Cookbook.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:2945342024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13Zby Clark, Melissa.
Call Number 641.5944
Publication Date 2020
Format: Electronic Resources
The Perfect Meal : In Search of the Lost Tastes of France.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:3089132024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13Zby Baxter, John.
Call Number 641.5944
Publication Date 2013
Summary John Baxter's The Perfect Meal is part grand tour of France, part history of French cuisine, taking readers on a journey to discover and savor some of the world's great cultural achievements before they disappear completely. Unlike many previous studies, it employs a comparative approach: France and Sweden have been chosen as case studies both for their similarities (e.g. both are member states of the European Union) as well as their important differences (e.g. France subscribes in principle to a civic model of national identity, whereas the basis of Swedish identity is undeniably ethnic). It is precisely differences such as these which allow for a more comprehensive understanding of the ethnolinguistic implications of some of the major challenges currently facing France, Sweden and other European countries: regionalism, immigration, European integration and globalization." "The present volume benefits from the use of a multidisciplinary approach, and differs from others on the market because of the variety of methods of inquiry used. A series of societal analyses is complemented by an empirical component, bringing a more grounded understanding to the issue of language and national identity."--BOOK JACKET. The battle was only the beginning of a long and complex transition to peace. To end this first "total" war, the powers allied against Napoleon developed a new approach to peace-making: a military occupation designed not to conquer territory, but rather to guarantee that the defeated nation reconstruct itself and repay the damages it had caused. Our Friends the Enemies provides the first comprehensive history of the post-Napoleonic "occupation of guarantee." From 1815 to 1818, a multinational occupation force of 150,000 men was stationed in seven departments along the northeastern frontier, at the expense of the French government. Recounting the experience of both occupiers and occupied, the author shows that while the occupation inevitably involved some violence, it also promoted considerable exchange and reconciliation between the French and their former enemies. Although its significance has long been overlooked, the post-Napoleonic occupation of guarantee foreshadowed later efforts at postwar reconstruction, including the Allied occupations of Germany and Japan after World War II.--
Format: Electronic Resources
http://ezproxy.angliss.edu.au/login?url=http://ezproxy.angliss.edu.au/login?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=1896405
Fight or flight : Britain, France, and their roads from empire / Martin Thomas.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:3095662024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13Zby Thomas, Martin, 1964- author.
Call Number 941.085 22
Publication Date 2014
Summary Although shattered by war, in 1945 Britain and France still controlled the world's two largest colonial empires, with imperial territories stretched over four continents. Through its timeless glass doors float the aromas of strong coffee and black tobacco, hot milk and fresh croissants. The cafe, open early till late, is both focus and microcosm of society. Friends talk; lovers linger; the white saucers pile up as the world goes by; a lone customer comes in to read the newspapers or for a petit verre at the bar. The French cafe is a refuge, a place to meet, to sit, to see and be seen. An essential book for anyone interested in French life and culture, here is a wonderfully new and intimate look at a great institution, from the grand establishments dating from the beginning of the century to the small rural bistro, from the workers' local cafes to the legendary Parisian cafes where the poets, painters and philosophers gathered. From Directoire decoration to Starck style, this book reveals the rich variety and extraordinary inventiveness of cafe design.
Format: Books
Women's rights and women's lives in France, 1944-1968 / Claire Duchen.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:2320872024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13Zby Duchen, Claire.
Call Number 305.420944 20
Publication Date 1994
Summary Claire Duchen explores women's everyday lives in France between the liberation and May '68 and considers the tensions created by competing visions of womanhood.
Format: Electronic Resources
The gourmet's Tour de France : 27 great French restaurants and their favouriterecipesent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:37902024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13Zby Viard, Henry
Call Number 641.5944 VIA
Publication Date 1984
Format: Books
Richelieu's army : war, government, and society in France, 1624-1642 / David Parrott.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:2231972024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13Zby Parrott, David.
Call Number 944.032 21
Publication Date 2001
Summary It is assumed widely that 'war made the state' in seventeenth-century France. Making a radical change of historical protagonists, the author places the mechanical arts and the world of making at the heart of the Enlightenment. At a time of great colonial, commercial, and imperial concerns, artistes planned encyclopedic projects and sought an official role in the administration of the French state. The Société des Arts, which they envisioned as a state institution that would foster France's colonial and economic expansion, was the msot ambitious expression of their collective aspirations. This work provides the first in-depth study of the Société, and demonstrates its legacy in scientific programs, academies, and the making of Diderot and D'Alembert's Encyclopédie. Through insightful analysis of textual, visual, and material sources, the author provides a ground-breaking perspective on the politics of writing on the mechanical arts and the development of key Enlightenment concepts such as improvement, utility, and progress.
Format: Electronic Resources
http://ezproxy.angliss.edu.au/login?url=http://ezproxy.angliss.edu.au/login?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=1622336
Liberty and locality in revolutionary France : six villages compared, 1760-1820 / Peter Jones.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:2261592024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13Zby Jones, Peter, 1949-
Call Number 944.034 22
Publication Date 2003
Summary This is the first 'comparative micro-historical' study to have been attempted for the period between the old and the new France, 1760-1820, which offers a strikingly new perspective on the rural history of France during an epoch of momentous change.
Format: Electronic Resources
Globalizing tobacco control : anti-smoking campaigns in California, France, and Japan / Roddey Reid.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:2293702024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13Zby Reid, Roddey, 1952-
Call Number 362.2967 22
Publication Date 2005
Summary Traces the culture and politics of anti-smoking efforts in three sites with distinct social histories.
Format: Electronic Resources
Nuclear Politics : Energy and the State in the United States, Sweden, and France.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:3096432024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13Zby Jasper, James M.
Call Number 333.7924 20
Publication Date 2014
Summary Why did nuclear energy policies in France, Sweden, and the United States, very similar at the time of the oil crisis of 1973 and 1974, diverge so greatly in the following years? In answering this question, James Jasper challenges one of the most popular trends in political analysis: explanations relying exclusively on political and economic structures to account for public policies. Jasper proposes a new cultural and state-centered approach--one heeding not only structural factors but cultural meanings, individual biographies, and elite discretion. More than transient news stories, the popular 'Our Man in Paris' series consists of essays on all things French. Sometimes serious, at other times light-hearted, they offer varied vignettes of life in the hexagone and trace the author's evolving relationship with his adopted country. Many of Lichfield's themes concern the mysteries of Paris and its people. Who is responsible for the city's extraordinary plumbing? How can you drive around the Arc de Triomphe and survive? He also ponders the phenomena that intrigue many foreigners, such as the eloquence of the capital's beggars and the identity of the intimidating but fast disappearing concierge.
Format: Electronic Resources
http://ezproxy.angliss.edu.au/login?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=451499
Dining on the France / Henri Le Huédé ; preface by Craig Claiborne ; introduction by Joseph Wechsberg.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:198292024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13Zby Lehuédé, Henri.
Call Number 641.5944 LEH
Publication Date 1981
Format: Books
The chef's table : an Australian gourmet in the great restaurants of France / Barbara Ross.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:115202024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13Zby Ross, Barbara
Call Number 647.9544 ROS
Publication Date 1990
Format: Books
A table in the tarn : living, eating and cooking in South-west France / Orlando Murrin.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:267802024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13Zby Murrin, Orlando.
Call Number 641.59447 MUR
Publication Date 2008
Format: Books
The flavours of France : fabulous vegetarian cuisine for every occasion / Jean Conil and Fay Franklin.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:2755522024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13Zby Conil, Jean.
Call Number ARC STA 641.5636 CON
Publication Date 1995
Format: Books
France : an illustrated miscellany / Denis Tillinac ; seried edited by Jean-Claude Simoen and Ghislaine Bavoillot.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:1515882024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13Zby Tillinac, Denis, author.
Call Number 944 TIL
Publication Date 2014
Summary Prepare to embark on a Tour de France like no other. Today her views on the benefits of aesthetic surgery to women may seem at odds with her feminist principles, but by placing Noël in the context of turn-of-the-century French culture, this book is able to demonstrate how these two worldviews were reconciled. This book sheds much valuable light on advances in aesthetic surgery, twentieth-century beauty culture, women and the public sphere, and the 'new woman'.
Format: Electronic Resources
http://ezproxy.angliss.edu.au/login?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=772158
France's New Deal [electronic resource] : from the thirties to the postwar era / Philip Nord.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:2419002024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13Zby Nord, Philip G., 1950-
Call Number 944.0816 22
Publication Date 2010
Summary France's New Deal is an in-depth and important look at the remaking of the French state after World War II, a time when the nation was endowed with brand-new institutions for managing its economy and culture. Yet, as Philip Nord reveals, the significant process of state rebuilding did not begin at the Liberation. Rather, it got started earlier, in the waning years of the Third Republic and under the Vichy regime. Tracking the nation's evolution from the 1930s through the postwar years, Nord describes how a variety of political actors--socialists, Christian democrats, technocrats, and Gaullists--had a hand in the construction of modern France. Nord examines the French development of economic planning and a cradle-to-grave social security system; and he explores the nationalization of radio, the creation of a national cinema, and the funding of regional theaters. Nord shows that many of the policymakers of the Liberation era had also served under the Vichy regime, and that a number of postwar institutions and policies were actually holdovers from the Vichy era--minus the authoritarianism and racism of those years. From this perspective, the French state after the war was neither entirely new nor purely social-democratic in inspiration. The state's complex political pedigree appealed to a range of constituencies and made possible the building of a wide base of support that remained in place for decades to come.
Format: Electronic Resources
The frail social body : pornography, homosexuality, and other fantasies in interwar France / Carolyn J. Alarmed by Bismarck's territorial ambitions and the Prussian army's crushing defeats of Denmark in 1864 and Austria in 1866, French Emperor Napoleon III vowed to bring Prussia to heel. Digging into many European and American archives for the first time, The Franco-Prussian War describes the war that followed in thrilling detail. Prussia and its German allies had twice as many troops as the French. But Marshal Achille Bazaine's grognards ('old grumblers') were the stuff of legend, the most resourceful, battle-hardened, sharp-shooting troops in Europe, and they carried the best rifle in the world. From the political intrigues that began and ended the war to the bloody battles at Gravelotte and Sedan and the last murderous fights on the Loire and in Paris, this is the definitive history of the Franco-Prussian War."--Jacket.
Format: Electronic Resources
Goose fat and garlic : country recipes from south-west France / Jeanne Strang ; illustrations by Tony Gregson.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:1265142024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13Zby Strang, Jeanne
Call Number 641.59447 STR
Publication Date 1991
Format: Books
Le livre de recettes d'un compagnon du tour de France. 1. Russell Weigley writes: "The historic preoccupation of the Army's thought in peacetime has been the manpower question: how, in an unmilitary nation, to muster adequate numbers of capable soldiers quickly should war occur." When the nature of modern warfare made an all-volunteer army inadequate, the major Western democracies confronted the dilemma of involuntary military service in a free society. The core of this manuscript concerns methods by which France, Great Britain, and the United States solved the problem and why some solutions were more lasting and effective than others. Flynn challenges conventional wisdom that suggests that conscription was inefficient and that it promoted inequality of sacrifice. Sharing similar but not identical diplomatic outlooks, the three countries discussed here were allies in world wars and in the Cold War, and they also confronted the problem of using conscripts to defend colonial interests in an age of decolonization. These societies rest upon democratic principles, and operating a draft in a democracy raises several unique problems. A particular tension develops as a result of adopting forced military service in a polity based on concepts of individual rights and freedoms. Despite the protest and inconsistencies, the criticism and waste, Flynn reveals that conscription served the three Western democracies well in an historical context, proving effective in gathering fighting men and allowing a flexibility to cope and change as problems arose.
Format: Electronic Resources
The rise of professional women in France : gender and public administration since 1830 / Linda L. Linda L. Clark traces several generations of French women in public administration, examining public policy and politics, attitudes towards gender, and women's work and education. Women's own perceptions and assessments of their positions illustrate changes in gender roles and women's relationship to the state. With seniority-based promotion, maternity leaves and the absence of the marriage bar, the situation of French women administrators invites comparison with their counterparts in other countries. Why has the profile of women's employment in France differed from that in the USA and the UK? This study gives unique insights into French social, political and cultural history, and the history of women during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It will interest scholars of European history and also specialists in women's studies.
Format: Electronic Resources
Romancing the past : the rise of vernacular prose historiography in thirteenth-century France / Gabrielle M. Champagne is declared a unique emblem of French sophistication and luxury, linked to the myth of its invention by Dom Pérignon. Across the Channel, a cup of sweet tea is recognized as a quintessentially English icon, simultaneously conjuring images of empire, civility, and relentless rain that demands the sustenance and comfort that only tea can provide. How did these tastes develop in the seventeenth century? Commerce, Food, and Identity in Seventeenth-Century England and France: Across the Channel offers a compelling historical narrative of the relationship between food, national identity, and political economy in the early modern period. These mutually influential relationships are revealed through comparative and transnational analyses of effervescent wine, spices and cookbooks, the development of coffeehouses and cafés, and the 'national sweet tooth' in England and France.
Format: Electronic Resources
The food of France / Waverley Root ; with an introduction by Samuel Chamberlain ; illustrated by Warren Chappell.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:70472024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13Zby Root, Waverley Lewis, 1903-1982.
Call Number ARC 641.5944 ROO
Publication Date 1958
Format: Books
France : the essential guide to culture, customs & business etiquette / by Joe Laredo ; maps & cartoons [by] Jim Watson.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:262002024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13Zby Laredo, Joe.
Call Number 994 LAR
Publication Date 2007
Summary Culture wise guides are essential reading for visitors and residents who want to know how a country really works. Two Disney theme parks have opened near Paris in the last two decades. And American-inspired vocabulary such as "le weekend" has been absorbed into the French language. But as former French president Jacques Chirac put it: "The U.S. finds France unbearably pretentious. And we find the U.S. unbearably hegemonic." Are the French fascinated or threatened by America? They Americanize yet are notorious for expressions of anti-Americanism. She reveals the diversity of Jewish life throughout France's regions, while showing how Jewish identity has constantly redefined itself in a country known for both the Rights of Man and the Dreyfus affair. Beginning with late antiquity, she charts the migrations of Jews into France and traces their fortunes through the making of the French kingdom, the Revolution, the rise of modern anti-Semitism, and the current renewal of interest in Judaism." "Reinterpreting such themes as assimilation, acculturation, and pluralism, Benbassa finds that French Jews have integrated successfully without always risking loss of identity."--Jacket.
Format: Electronic Resources
The aesthetics of hate [electronic resource] : far-right intellectuals, antisemitism, and gender in 1930s France / Sandrine Sanos.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:2577182024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13Zby Sanos, Sandrine.
Call Number 303.4840944 23
Publication Date 2013
Summary This book examines the writings of a motley collection of interwar far-right intellectuals, showing that they defined Frenchness in racial, gendered, and sexual terms. A broad, ambitious cultural and intellectual history, the book offers a provocative reinterpretation of a topic that has long been the subject of controversy. In works infused with rhetorics of abjection, disgust, and dissolution, such writers as Maulnier, Brasillach, Céline, and Blanchot imagined the nation through figures deemed illegitimate or inferior - Jews, colonial subjects, homosexuals, women.
Format: Electronic Resources
Origins of the French welfare state : the struggle for social reform in France, 1914-1947 / Paul V. [O]ne can read the book through the lens of such great African American writers and activists as Richard Wright, James Baldwin, and Malcolm X ... [It] contains an implicit warning to you, France, not to repeat the American racism in your country."--The foreword by Manthia Diawara Muslim girls growing up in the outer-cities of Paris are portrayed many ways in popular discourse -- as oppressed, submissive, foreign, "kids from the projects," even as veil-wearing menaces to France's national identity -- but rarely are they perceived simply as what they say they are: French. Amid widespread perceptions of heightened urban violence attributed to Muslims and highly publicized struggles over whether Muslim students should be allowed to wear headscarves to school, Muslim girls often appear to be the quintessential "other." In this vivid, evocative study, Trica Danielle Keaton draws on ethnographic research in schools, housing projects, and other settings among Muslim teenagers of North and West African origin. She finds contradictions between the ideal of universalism and the lived reality of ethnic distinction and racialized discrimination. The author's own experiences as an African American woman and non-Muslim are key parts of her analysis. Keaton makes a powerful statement about identity, race, and educational politics in contemporary France.
Format: Electronic Resources
Appetizers : dine with France's master chefs / Fabien Bellahsen, Andre Delmoral, Daniel Rouche; translation from French, Clemence Scouten.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:1242802024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13Zby Delmoral, Andre
Call Number 641.812 APP
Publication Date 1999
Format: Books
Market microstructure in practice / Charles-Albert Lehalle (Capital Fund Management, France) & Sophie Laruelle (Universite Paris-Est Creteil, France).ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:2616592024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13Zby Lehalle, Charles-Albert.
Call Number 332.0415 23
Publication Date 2013
Summary Market Microstructure in Practice comments on the consequences of Reg NMS and MiFID on market microstructure. The emergence of high frequency trading and critical events like the "Flash Crash" of 2010 are also analyzed in depth. Using a quantitative viewpoint, this book will help students, academics, regulators, policy makers, and practitioners understand how an attrition of liquidity and regulatory changes can impact the whole microstructure of financial markets. Not just in different recipes and ways of cooking, but in their underlying attitudes toward the enjoyment of eating and its place in social life. In a new afterword that draws the United States and other European countries into the food fight, Stephen Mennell also addresses the rise of Asian influence and "multicultural" cuisine. All Manners of Food debunks long-standing myths and provides a wealth of information. It is a sweeping look at how social and political development has helped to shape different culinary cultures. Food and almost everything to do with food - fasting and gluttony, cookbooks, women's magazines, chefs and cooks, types of foods, the influential difference between "court" and "country" food - are comprehensively explored and tastefully presented in a dish that will linger in the memory long after the plates have been cleared.
Format: Books
Women's writing in twenty-first-century France [electronic resource] : life as literature / edited by Amaleena Damlé and Gill Rye.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:2597972024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13Zby Damlé, Amaleena.
Call Number 840.99287 23
Publication Date 2013
Summary Women's Writing in Twenty-First Century France is the first book-length publication on women-authored literature of this period, and comprises a collection of challenging critical essays that engage with the themes, trends and issues, and with the writers and their texts, of the first decade of the twenty-first century.
Format: Electronic Resources
Bouquet de France : an epicurean tour of the French provinces / recipes translated from the French and adapted by Narcissa Chamberlain.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:312592024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13Zby Chamberlain, Samuel, 1895-
Call Number ARC 641.5944 CHA
Publication Date 1957
Format: Books
Confronting America [electronic resource] : the Cold War between the United States and the communists in France and Italy / Alessandro Brogi.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:2517002024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13Zby Brogi, Alessandro, 1963-
Call Number 327.73044 22
Publication Date 2011
Summary Fierce and cunning in their Cold War anti-American propaganda, the French and Italian Communists identified capitalist oppression with American domination. Five countries are at the centre of the research: The United States, Great Britain, France, Turkey and Russia, each of them being a victim of multiple terrorist attacks. This volume is grounded in a conceptual presumption that the countries directly affected by terrorism produce different types of responses. Of course, there is much in common in all five country cases, but the most interesting part of the research exercise is identifying the divergences. Frederic Jaher develops a vehicle for a broader and uniquely rich analysis of French and American nation-building and political culture. He returns grand theory to historical scholarship by examining the Jewish encounter with state formation and Jewish acquisition of civic equality from the perspective of the "paradigm of liberal inclusiveness" as formulated by Alexis de.
Format: Electronic Resources
Cuisine of France: preface by Roland Magne, with 300 recipes illustrated in color / Danielle Ancelet ; [translated from the French by Adele Dejey].ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:293532024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13Zby Ancelet, Danielle
Call Number ARC 641.5944 ANC
Publication Date 1981
Format: Books
A little taste of . . . Researchers in this field are faced with the problem of solving a variety of equations or variational inequalities. We note that in computational sciences, the practice of numerical analysis for finding such solutions is essentially connected to variants of Newton's method. The efficient computational methods for finding the solutions of fixed point problems, nonlinear equations and variational inclusions are the first goal of the present book. The second goal is the applications of these methods in nonlinear problems and the connection with fixed point theory. This book is intended for researchers in computational sciences, and as a reference book for an advanced computational methods in nonlinear analysis. We collect the recent results on the convergence analysis of numerical algorithms in both finite-dimensional and infinite-dimensional spaces, and present several applications and connections with fixed point theory. The book contains abundant and updated bibliography, and provides comparison between various investigations made in recent years in the field of computational nonlinear analysis.
Format: Electronic Resources
Structural control for civil and infrastructure engineering [electronic resource] : proceedings of the 3rd international workshop on structural control : Paris, France 6-8 July 2000 / editors, Fabio Casciati, Georges Magonette.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:2343602024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13Zby International Workshop on Structural Control (3rd : 2000 : Paris, France)
Call Number 624.1 22
Publication Date 2001
Summary Structural control represents a high technology proposal for civil engineering innovation. How did homosexuality -- an act that had for centuries been defined as criminal and abominable -- come to be sanctioned by law? In Judging Homosexuals, Patrice Corriveau finds answers in a comparative analysis of gay persecution in France and Quebec. By tracing over time how various groups -- family and clergy, doctors and jurists -- tried to manage people who were defined in turn as sinners, as criminals, as inverts, and as citizens deserving of protection, this book shows how the law helped construct the crime.

Format: Electronic Resources
From associations to rules [electronic resource] : connectionist models of behavior and cognition : proceedings of the tenth Neural Computation and Psychology Workshop, Dijon, France, 12-14 April 2007 / editors, Robert M. One element of this debate is questioning whether the United States should create a dedicated domestic intelligence agency. Case studies of five other democracies--Australia, Canada, France, Germany, and the UK --provide lessons and common themes that may help policymakers decide. The authors find that: most of the five countries separate the agency that conducts domestic intelligence gathering from any arrest and detention powers; each country has instituted some measure of external oversight over its domestic intelligence agency; liaison with other international, foreign, state, and local agencies helps ensure the best sharing of information; the boundary between domestic and international intelligence activities may be blurring.--Publisher description.
Format: Electronic Resources
Health Continuum and Data Exchange in Belgium and in the Netherlands : Proceedings of Medical Informatics Congress (MIC 2004) & 5th Belgian e-Health Conference / edited by Francis H. Since the early eighties, atoms coupled to optical and microwave cavities have led to pioneering demonstrations of cavity quantum electrodynamics, Gedanken experiments, and building blocks for quantum information processing, for which the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded in 2012. In the framework of semiconducting devices, strong coupling has allowed investigations into the physics of Bose gases in solid-state environments, and the latter holds promise for exploiting light-matter interaction at the single-photon level in scalable architectures. More recently, impressive developments in the so-called superconducting circuit QED have opened another fundamental playground to revisit cavity quantum electrodynamics for practical and fundamental purposes. This book aims at developing the necessary interface between these communities, by providing future researchers with a robust conceptual, theoretical and experimental basis on strong light-matter coupling, both in the classical and in the quantum regimes. In addition, the emphasis is on new forefront research topics currently developed around the physics of strong light-matter interaction in the atomic and solid-state scenarios.
Format: Electronic Resources
Les Cotes Du Rhone [map] / carte publiee par la Revue du vin de France sous le haut patronage de L'institut National des Appelations D'origine et du Comite National des vins de France : map published by the French wine revue under the high patronage of the Institute of National Trade names and of the National Committee of French wines.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:73172024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13ZCall Number MAP 663.2209449 COT
Publication Date 1976
Format: Maps
Les vins de Bordeaux [map] The wines of Bordeaux / carte publiee par la revue du vin de France sous le haut patronage de l'institut national des appelations d'origine et du comite national des vins de France : map published by the French wine revue under the high patronage of the National Institut of original trade names and of the National Committee of French wines.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:73122024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13ZCall Number MAP 663.220944714 VIN
Publication Date 1968
Format: Maps
Les vins de Bordeaux [map] The wines of Bordeaux : Saint Emilion / carte publiee par la Revue du vin de France sous le haut patronage de L'institut National des Appelations D'origine et du Comite National des vins de France : map published by the French wine revue under the high patronage of the Institute of National Trade names and of the National Committee of French wines.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:73162024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13ZCall Number MAP 663.220944714 VIN
Publication Date 1973
Format: Maps
Les vins de Bourgogne [map] The wines of Burgundy : La Cote de Beaune / carte publiee par la Revue du vin de France sous le haut patronage de L'institut National des Appelations D'origine et du Comite National des vins de France : map published by the French wine revue under the high patronage of the Institute of National Trade names and of the National Committee of French wines.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:73152024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13ZCall Number MAP 663.2209444 VIN
Publication Date 1972
Format: Books
Les vins du Val de Loire [map] The wines of the Loire Valley : Muscadet Anjou Saumur Touraine Centre / carte publiee par la Revue du vin de France sous le haut patronage de L'institute National des Appellations D'origine et du Comite National des vins de France : map published by the Revue of French wine under the high patronage of the National Institute of Original Trade names and the National Committee of French wines.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:73142024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13ZCall Number MAP 663.2209445 VIN
Publication Date 1976
Format: Maps
Mycotoxins : Detection Methods, Management, Public Health and Agricultural Trade.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:2904532024-05-08T04:20:13Z2024-05-08T04:20:13Zby France, J.
Call Number 615.95295
Publication Date 2008
Summary Examining mycotoxins and their impact from a public health viewpoint, this book provides an overview and introduction to the subject and examines the health, trade and legislation issues involved.
