The 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change and the adoption of the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals through the United Nations have highlighted the need to address critical challenges such as the buildup of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, water shortages, and air pollution. But in the United States, partisan divides, regional disputes, and deep disagreements over core principles have made it nearly impossible to chart a course toward a sustainable future. This timely new book, edited by celebrated scholar Daniel C. Esty, offers fresh thinking and forward-looking solutions from environmental thought leaders across the political spectrum. The book's forty essays cover such subjects as ecology, environmental justice, Big Data, public health, and climate change, all with an emphasis on sustainability. The book focuses on moving toward sustainability through actionable, bipartisan approaches based on rigorous analytical research."--
Format: Electronic Resources
http://ezproxy.angliss.edu.au/login?url=http://ezproxy.angliss.edu.au/login?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=2260663
Sustainability : Approaches to Environmental Justice and Social Power / edited by Julie Sze. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:299463 2024-05-21T10:42:06Z 2024-05-21T10:42:06Z by Sze, Julie, editor.
Call Number 338.927
Publication Date 2018
Summary Sustainability and social justice remain elusive even though each is unattainable without the other. Across the industrialized West and the Global South, unsustainable practices and social inequities exacerbate one another. How do social justice and sustainability connect? What does sustainability mean and, most importantly, how can we achieve it with justice? This volume tackles these questions, placing social justice and interdisciplinary approaches at the center of efforts for a more sustainable world. Contributors present empirical case studies that illustrate how sustainability can take place without contributing to social inequality. From indigenous land rights, climate conflict, militarization, and urban drought resilience, the book offers examples of ways in which sustainability and social justice strengthen one another. Through an understanding of history, diverse cultural traditions, and complexity in relation to race, class, and gender, this volume demonstrates ways in which sustainability can help to shape better and more robust solutions to the world's most pressing problems. Blending methods from the humanities, environmental sciences, and the humanistic social sciences, this book offers an essential guide for the next generation of global citizens. -- From back cover.
Format: Electronic Resources
Principles of sustainability / editor, Lerner Media Group. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:306661 2024-05-21T10:42:06Z 2024-05-21T10:42:06Z by Lerner Media Group, editor.
Call Number 338.927 23
Publication Date 2017
Summary Provides students and researchers with a solid foundation to study of sustainability.
Format: Electronic Resources
Race for sustainability : energy, economy, environment and ethics / by Ken Hickson (Sustain Ability Showcase Asia, Singapore). ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:261469 2024-05-21T10:42:06Z 2024-05-21T10:42:06Z by Hickson, Ken, author.
Call Number 338.927 23
Publication Date 2014
Summary "Even with the latest and best vehicles, machinery, technology and buildings, if we continue to use resources irresponsibly - if we continue to waste food, water and energy - we are not even in the race." This book looks at the sustainable issues and the accompanying opportunities, and leads readers on a fast track to clear the air and drive to a sustainable, low-carbon future. Creating a Sustainable and Desirable Future offers a broad, critical discussion on what such a future should or can be, with global perspectives written by some of the world's leading thinkers, namely Wendell Berry, Van Jones, Frances Moore Lappe, Peggy Liu, Hunter Lovins and Gus Speth. This monograph reviews the role played by TFS in masking, pitch perception, speech perception, and spatial hearing, and concludes that cues derived from TFS play an important role in all of these. Evidence is reviewed suggesting that cochlear hearing loss reduces the ability to use TFS cues. Also, the ability to use TFS declines with increasing age even when the audiogram remains normal. This provides a new dimension to the changes in hearing associated with aging, a topic that is currently of great interest in view of the increasing proportion of older people in the population. The study of the role of TFS in auditory processing has been a hot topic in recent years. While there have been many research papers on this topic in specialized journals, there has been no overall review that pulls together the different research findings and presents and interprets them within a coherent framework. This monograph fills this gap.
Format: Electronic Resources
