C.
Call Number 658.4012 22
Publication Date 2010
Summary The field of strategic management emerged and developed in North America before migrating to other parts of the world. Until recently, the relationship between North American strategy research and research elsewhere was asymmetric: North America led, other research communities followed. More recently, however, the interaction between North American strategy researchers and those working in other regions has evolved into a conversation. Oftentimes the conversation is collaborative and productive, but occasionally it is adversarial and provocative. While the globalization of strategy research has added considerably to our understanding, it has also brought about greater theoretical and methodological pluralism as formal, rhetorical, discursive, and practice perspectives (among others) emerge and gain traction within the field. For some, pluralism is a phase in the larger cycle of variation and consolidation that characterizes the evolution of strategy research. For others, it is a reflection of fundamentally different socioeconomic conditions and intellectual traditions around the world that is not only likely to persist, but also to give rise to distinctive and potentially irreconcilable schools of thought. Volume 27 of Advances in Strategic Management brings together various emerging perspectives in strategy research for further interaction and debate. By creating a forum for discussing issues at the interface of emerging perspectives and longstanding traditions, we aim to assemble a compendium that contributes to cross-fertilization among them, as well as a catalyst for future research countering the separatist logic that threatens to partition the field.
Format: Electronic Resources
Technological know-how, organizational capabilities, and strategic management [electronic resource] : business strategy and enterprise development in competitive environments / David J. As part of that, DHS leadership must define concrete and sensible objectives and measures of success. These can be used to assess results along the way, to guide allocation of resources, and to inform programming and budgeting for future capabilities and functions. This report offers research and recommendations on ways to measure the overall efforts of the national border-security enterprise between ports of entry. To be meaningful, the set of measures for effectiveness of border security should be sound, reliable, useful, and general. Three DHS missions appear to currently be of special interest to DHS leadership because they are especially problematic: illegal drug control, counterterrorism, and illegal migration. The report recommends measuring performance of three fundamental functions that border-security efforts contribute to achieving national policy objectives: interdiction, deterrence, and exploiting networked intelligence. If the steps described here are taken, DHS and its components will be in a better position to discuss past performance and to provide reasoned justifications for future allocation of resources. Further, they will be able to relate their efforts to those of other agencies in pursuit of national objectives.
Format: Electronic Resources
Beyond school improvement : the journey to innovative leadership / Robert Davidovich [and others] ; foreword by Rick Stiggins. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:262236 2024-05-15T20:39:18Z 2024-05-15T20:39:18Z by Davidovich, Robert.
Call Number 371.207 22
Publication Date 2010
Summary Filled with anecdotal examples, reflection exercises, and practical strategies, this is a useful and timely resource for educators seeking to understand and influence educational innovation and transformation in the 21st century.
Format: Electronic Resources
Strategic human resource management in health care / edited by Myron D. Given that salary and wages constitute about 65 to 80% of the total operating budget in a typical health care organization and also the fact that people play a critical role in delivering high quality patient care, it is imperative for health care organizations to manage their human resources more effectively. Unfortunately, the HR function remains one of the most neglected in health care organizations and 'warm body syndrome' seems to characterize the role of HRM in health care organizations. The purpose of the special issue of AHCM on Human Resource Management is to explore the strategic role that HR function can play in delivering high quality and affordable health care.
Format: Electronic Resources
Implementing for results [electronic resource] : your strategic plan in action / Sandra Nelson for the Public Library Association. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:237204 2024-05-15T20:39:18Z 2024-05-15T20:39:18Z by Nelson, Sandra S.
Call Number 025.1974 22
Publication Date 2009
Format: Electronic Resources
Strategic issues management [electronic resource] : organizations and public policy challenges / Robert L. This paper explores an approach to assessing emerging and/or novel threats and deciding whether, or how much, they should concern security planners by asking two questions: (1) Are some of the novel threats 'niche threats' that should be addressed within existing security efforts? (2) Which of the remaining threats are attackers most likely to execute successfully and should therefore be of greater concern for security planners? If threats can reasonably be considered niche threats, they can be prudently addressed in the context of existing security activities. If threats are unusual enough, suggest significant new vulnerabilities, or their probability or consequences means they cannot be considered lesser included cases within other threats, prioritizing them based on their ease of execution provides a guide for which threats merit the greatest concern and most security attention. This preserves the opportunity to learn from new threats yet prevents security planners from being pulled in many directions simultaneously by attempting to respond to every threat at once."--Page 4 of cover.
Format: Electronic Resources
Creative community organizing [electronic resource] : a guide for rabble-rousers, activists, and quiet lovers of justice / Si Kahn. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:186050 2024-05-15T20:39:18Z 2024-05-15T20:39:18Z by Kahn, Si, author.
Call Number 307.14 22
Publication Date 2010
Summary "Privatization has been on the right-wing agenda for years. Health care, schools, Social Security, public lands, the military, prisons -- all are considered fair game. The author proposes that service providers consider five key questions when setting up new partnerships: Is this partnership necessary?; What is its purpose?; Who is involved?; Where will it function?; How will it work?. Fletcher discusses the common problems of building successful partnerships - such as conflicts of interest and allocation of funding and resources - and offers guidance and practical tips on dealing with them. Kent was a uniquely acute analyst and developer of American defense policy in the second half of the twentieth century. His 33-year career in the Air Force was followed by more than 20 years as one of the leading analysts at RAND. This volume is not a memoir in the normal sense but rather a summary of the dozens of national security issues in which Glenn was personally engaged over the course of his career. These issues included creating the single integrated operational plan (SIOP), leading DoD's official assessment of strategic defenses in the 1960s, developing and analyzing strategic nuclear arms control agreements, helping to bring new weapon systems to life, and many others. Each vignette describes the analytical frameworks and, where appropriate, the mathematical formulas and charts that Glenn developed and applied to gain insights into the issue at hand. The author also relates his roles in much of the bureaucratic pulling and hauling that occurred as issues were addressed within the government."--Publisher's website.
Format: Electronic Resources
The successful library trustee handbook [electronic resource] / Mary Y. This means, in particular, ensuring that the states of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) remain able and willing to make a contribution to resolving their common security problems wherever possible. The revision of NATO's strategic concept offers an excellent opportunity to further this aim. It is a chance to build consensus about the future and thereby steer the alliance in a direction that will help keep it relevant. This paper examines five possible directions--refocus on Europe, new focus on the greater Middle East, focus on fragile states, focus on nonstate threats, and a global alliance of liberal democracies--the alliance might adopt, assessing them against certain key political and military criteria. It offers those involved in the rewrite both a range of potential options and a preliminary assessment of the feasibility and potential implications of each. The purpose is to encourage debate around the major, concrete problems that member states face."--RAND web site.
Format: Electronic Resources
William Angliss Institute strategic plan/ William Angliss Institute of TAFE. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:21764 2024-05-15T20:39:18Z 2024-05-15T20:39:18Z by William Angliss Institute of TAFE.
Call Number WAIARC 378.945 STR 2001-2003
Publication Date 2024 2023 2022 2021 2020
Format: Other
Supervision and business operations. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:20592 2024-05-15T20:39:18Z 2024-05-15T20:39:18Z by Cole, Kris.
Call Number 658.302 SUP
Publication Date 2005
Summary Section 1 (Cole) : Chapter 8 - Building performance and productivity ; Chapter 11 - Solving problems and making decisions ; Chapter 23 - Providing work instructions and delegating duties ; Chapter 1 - The Supervisors's changing job and working environment ; Chapter 5 - Planning and monitoring for goal achievement ; Chapter 20 - Providing leadership ; Chapter 21 - Motivating others ; Chapter 22 Leading work teams. Frequently the main challenge for a real estate investor lies in how to spend the accumulated wealth. After all, you can only mortgage out so much capital before you have a negative cash flow. The effect is called being Land Rich and Cash Poor. Ultimately, every investor has to sell or gift property at some point in time. Christian M. Ramsey, a planning specialist for property and business owners, explains many important strategies to be aware of for a real estate investor that is seeking to increase cash flow (for whatever reason) by the sale of a property or a business. With case studies, comparison charts and a working knowledge of basic rules and restrictions, this book will serve to explain all of an investor's choices when seeking to sell a highly appreciated property or business. Christian M. Ramsey has been a licensed securities representative since 1996 and has been an independent financial advisor since 1998. Currently Mr. Ramsey runs a financial planning and investment advisory business in Northern California that specializes in planning and executing the strategies discussed in this book. He is also a CA Department of Real Estate Continuing Education Provider for his class on Exit Strategies, which is taught in Northern California. Land Rich, Cash Poor is the symptom associated with owning property. Every property owner is limited by how much equity that is accessible without forcing a negative cash flow or incurring a tax liability from a sale. Christian Ramsey explains some extremely complex subject matter in an easy to understand format. Core concepts are explored with story-book explanations and side-by side comparison are offered to help an average real estate investor or professional greatly expand their knowledge on how to sell or gift property. The key concerns a property owner always faces with an investment are control, cash flow and liquidity. By giving some tips from a financial and estate planner's point of view, a reader can hone in on which of the major concerns are most important when weighed against a tax advantage, as that will ultimately drive the Exit Strategy employed. The end result is that there are dozens of ways to avoid or defer Capital Gains tax, and many of these techniques also address Estate tax, which can be far, far worse. With "Land Rich, Cash Poor" your eyes will open to a world that has fascinated me for several years. The best ways to own and control an 'Asset' and simple rules that generally allow for the sale of an appreciated property to result in double or more the cash flow previously experienced.
Format: Electronic Resources
Strategy for tourism [electronic resource] / John Tribe. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:33565 2024-05-15T20:39:18Z 2024-05-15T20:39:18Z by Tribe, John.
Call Number 338.4791 TRI
Publication Date 2010
Summary An internationally focused text which explains strategic management, analysis and implementation specifically in the tourism industry. The first concern includes the distinction between descriptive and prescriptive: how humans actually decide, versus how they should decide. Much of the early literature prescribed rational-analytic methods, such as embodied in systems analysis and policy analysis. The descriptive literature, however, has long noted that humans use heuristics (cognitive shortcuts), which are usually quite valuable, but which sometimes introduce unintended biases. Efforts have been made to improve decision support by "debiasing" the presentation of information. A newer literature on "naturalistic" decisionmaking, however, emphasizes the strengths of intuitive decisionmaking based on heuristics and questions the desirability of debiasing. Our study contrasts the schools of thought and suggests steps toward a synthesis. Ultimately, decision support should appeal to both the rational-analytic and the intuitive capabilities of the decisionmaker, with a balance of "cold" and story-based presentation of analysis and recommendations. The particular balance should depend on characteristics of the decision, the decision environment, and the decisionmaker. Our study also discusses new tools emerging for decision support, which include increasingly realistic models and simulations, such as virtual worlds, and new methods to help in the creative and imaginative aspects of strategic planning. Most important, we note modern methods, such as exploratory analysis, to encourage decisions and strategies that are flexible, adaptive, and robust so as to deal well with uncertainty.
Format: Electronic Resources
Public relations writing [electronic resource] : principles in practice / Donald Treadwell, Jill B. For everything new under the sun, there is a history (or at least a theory) of what preceded it and made it possible. With regard to each human accomplishment, it is nearly always possible to trace it back to earlier accomplishments that provided the foundation on which the subsequent advance was achieved. This thought is often expressed in the old quotation, "If I seem to see farther than those who came before me, it is because I am standing on the shoulders of giants." And so it was with the founding of the American Glaucoma Society (AGS). The authors identify the primary and secondary civilian agencies that should be involved in strategic-level planning and implementation of SSTR operations. Then, relying on available information on Provincial Reconstruction Teams and using a variety of federal databases, the authors identify the skill sets needed for the envisioned Field Advance Civilian Teams and where these skills reside in the federal government. The authors then assess the capacity of the main civilian agencies to participate in SSTR operations and analyze the recurring structural problems that have plagued their attempts to do so. The authors suggest a series of options that are worth considering in order to improve the current situation. Even without much action at the national level, the Army can still improve the situation by improving Army Civil Affairs and by executing a well-thought-out strategy of liaison officers assigned to the civilian agencies most important for SSTR operations.
Format: Electronic Resources
Strategies for therapy with the elderly [electronic resource] : living with hope and meaning / Claire M. However, recent U.S. experiences in Afghanistan and in Iraq, especially, have shown that engaging in stability and reconstruction operations is a difficult and lengthy process that requires appropriate resources. Most of all, to have a chance of succeeding, such operations require a realistic understanding of the capabilities needed for them. The authors present the results of research on the U.S. civilian personnel and staffing programs for stability and reconstruction operations undertaken in other countries under U.S. leadership or with the participation of the United States. The study uses the Office of Personnel Management's Human Capital Assessment and Accountability Framework to assess the personnel requirements for such operations. The Framework advocates strategic alignment, workforce planning and development, leadership and knowledge management, results-oriented performance culture, talent management, and accountability. The authors also present recommendations that the U.S. government should consider undertaking to deal with the types of problems that the United States has encountered in post-2003 Iraq. The research draws on the rapidly growing body of literature dealing with reconstruction and stability missions, interviews with U.S. and British civilian personnel deployed to Iraq, and the authors' own experiences in Iraq as U.S. civilians involved with the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA). The study should be of interest to policymakers dealing with stability and reconstruction operations.
Format: Electronic Resources
An economic development architecture for New Orleans [electronic resource] / Kevin F. The failure of the levees and the subsequent flooding of New Orleans caused enormous damage and disruption to the city, its people, and its economy. Recovering from a disaster of this magnitude poses a major challenge to the city, the state, and the nation. The complexity of this challenge is compounded by the fact that New Orleans' population and economy had been lagging for several decades before Katrina. In response to this situation, this report provides recommendations regarding effective organizational and strategic approaches to revitalizing the city's economy, identifies the best practices that other cities have used to foster economic development, and describes how these practices might be applied to New Orleans. Recommendations consider the organizational structure of a New Orleans economic development program and how it should strategically focus its efforts. Planning for the successful future economic development in the region depends on avoiding the mistakes of past efforts, so consideration is also given to historical trends and development missteps.
Format: Electronic Resources
The sustainability handbook : the complete management guide to achieving social, economic and environmental responsibility / by William R. To better approximate reality, it extends game theory beyond the two-player set piece. The book begins where former game theory literature ends? with multi-person games on a world stage. Moreover, most state arts agencies, or SAAs, have not succeeded in convincing state government leaders that the arts should be integral to their planning for their states' futures. This report, the second in a series commissioned by The Wallace Foundation to cover the findings of a multiyear RAND Corporation study of SAAs' changing roles and missions, examines SAA leaders' efforts to more firmly establish their agencies' value to state government in a changing political and fiscal environment. Case studies of two SAAs are used to illustrate a more strategic approach to public management, and to clarify some of the risks and rewards of bringing the arts and political worlds closer together.
Format: Electronic Resources
Making the most of Understanding by design / John L. This book, based on data gathered from surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions, reflects what educators have learned about effective UbD implementation and explores how schools and districts can leverage UbD principles to improve student achievement, staff performance, and organizational productivity. Educators who have used the UbD framework for several years in various school settings present advice, strategies, and processes for using Understanding by Design to* Design purposeful, coherent curricula* Deliver instruction that promotes understanding for all* Unpack district standards* Expand assessment repertoires* Create meaningful and effective professional development and teacher-induction programs* Sustain a successful process of continuous improvement and strategic planning. Each chapter concludes with organization-focused assessment questionnaires and related resources that can help you?as an individual or as a member of a study group or action research team?develop a clear, strategic sense of how to make the most of Understanding by Design as a catalyst for real learning, increased student achievement, and school and district renewal. This book came about in recognition of the tension that existed between what we taught and what we knew and practiced. Our main concern was the increasing difficulty in defending the 4 Ps framework of marketing. This approach while ground breaking in its time, and useful as an organising tool, has become so ubiquitous in marketing education that it has almost reached mythic status. No one questioned it, no one seemd to even think about it, it was just taught. In an even more worrying development, it was becoming used as a planning and implementation tool, and an operational decision template. Yet when we looked at our graduates and postgraduates, many of whom were already senior marketers, we could see little evidence that the 4 Ps actually represented what they practiced in the business world. It certainly categorised some areas of marketing activity, but helped little in day-to-day marketing management. In 2000 a team was put together to work on the project of developing a completely new introductory marketing textbook. We each brought to the table something different - experienced researchers, teachers, educationalists, writers and business consultants - to piece together what you see as the final book. The Value Model which is the underlying framework is an original and intuitive peice of work. The value planning model is an amalgam of ideas which had been circulating in various forms around the world which we have developed and adapted for our use. This provides a simple schematic that provides an organising framework for the book, and which we hope will become as well known as the 4 Ps. As part of the project we also wanted to explicitly recognise the importance of technology, the ubiquity of services, the impact of globalisation, the continuing concern of ethics and the ongoing importance of relationships and people." -- preface, page xi.
Format: Books
Higher education financing in East and Southern Africa [electronic resource] / edited by Pundy Pillay. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:253723 2024-05-15T20:39:18Z 2024-05-15T20:39:18Z by Pillay, Pundy, 1952-
Call Number 378.106 22
Publication Date 2010
Summary "This nine-country study of higher education financing in Africa includes three East African states (Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda), five countries in southern Africa (Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia and South Africa), and an Indian Ocean island state (Mauritius). Higher Education Financing in East and Southern Africa explores trends in financing policies, paying particular attention to the nature and extent of public sector funding of higher education, the growth of private financing (including both household financing and the growth of private higher education institutions) and the changing mix of financing instruments that these countries are developing in response to public sector financial constraints. This unique collection of African-country case studies draws attention to the remaining challenges around the financing of higher education in Africa, but also identifies good practices, lessons and common themes"--Cover.
Format: Electronic Resources
Bhutan [electronic resource] : Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:149739 2024-05-15T20:39:18Z 2024-05-15T20:39:18Z by Fund, International Monetary.
Call Number XX(149739.1)
Publication Date 2010
Summary Bhutan has evolved from a closed economy to a trading nation that exhibits a high degree of dependence on trade. In the last seven years, the field has exploded. In this completely revised and updated second edition, lead authors Peggy Holman, Tom Devane, and Steven Cady profile sixty-one change methods--up from eighteen in the first edition. Nineteen of these methods are explored in depth, with case studies, answers to frequently asked questions, and details on the roles and responsibilities of the people involved, conditions for success, and more. This tremendously expanded second edition--400 pages longer, nearly twice the length of the first edition--will undoubtedly become the definitive resource in this rapidly expanding area.
Format: Electronic Resources
The 2007-2012 world outlook for home health care services / by Philip M. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-a-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved. This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the 230 countries of the world). This study gives, however, my estimates for the worldwide latent demand, or the P.I.E., for home health care services. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided across the world's regional and national markets. For each country, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time (positive or negative growth). In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on international strategic planning at graduate schools of business.
Format: Electronic Resources
Handbook on business information systems [electronic resource] / edited by Angappa Gunasekaran, Maqsood Sandhu. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:244746 2024-05-15T20:39:18Z 2024-05-15T20:39:18Z by Gunasekaran, A.
Call Number 658.4038011 22
Publication Date 2010
Summary This handbook covers the vast field of business information systems, focusing particularly on developing information systems to capture and integrate information technology together with the people and their businesses. Yet with the outbreak of the war on terrorism, the United States is being violently challenged to take a position and react to militants' use of emerging information technology. Ideological demigods operating against the United States now have unprecedented channels by which to disseminate their message to those uncertain, sympathetic, or actively engaged in their philosophy. From the caves of southeastern Afghanistan to the streets of Baghdad, "the message" has dominated the thinking of those who perpetrate horrific acts of violence, whether in the name of ideology, ethnic and sectarian partisanship, or religion." "This book seeks to illuminate the uses of information in armed conflict by juxtaposing the views of those who engage in manipulating information against the historic context. The anthology is divided into four sections: geopolitical, strategic, operational, and tactical. The geopolitical perspective is that dominated by world politics, diplomacy, and the elements of national power excluding military force. The strategic view examines where the violence has begun and the military element of power that has become a major contributing factor. The operational perspective handles the campaigns to accomplish a specific purpose on the world stage- for example, the Iraq campaign. Finally, the tactical level takes into account the individual and the individual clashes within the campaigns at issue. Because the nexus of information conflict is most easily viewed in the world's contemporary violent confrontations, this anthology is heavily weighted toward military personnel who have managed these difficult issues."--Jacket.
Format: Electronic Resources
Encyclopedia of health care management / editor, Michael J.
