Economically, both domestic and international tourism can bring many benefits, although in some cases when you scratch the surface, it can also serve to deprive a local community of economic gain. Tourism also has socio-cultural and environmental impacts, which can be destructive to local areas. This film presents a range of tourism impacts and highlights the importance of awareness of, and sensitivity to, the detrimental effects that poorly managed tourism can have. It also looks at sustainable tourism and strategies to minimise negative impacts. Three interviewees from organisations within the travel and tourism industry that aim to promote sustainable strategies provide some informative and thought-provoking commentary. There are also street interviews. This resource will be of great benefit to students of Travel and Tourism and related areas of study, at the senior secondary and FE level.
Format: Other
ClickView Player
Women in Argentina [electronic resource] : early travel narratives / Mónica Szurmuk.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:2295262024-05-05T17:00:46Z2024-05-05T17:00:46Zby Szurmuk, Mónica.
Call Number 982.008203 22
Publication Date 2000
Summary ''Tells a compelling story about an almost unknown body of work--Argentine womens travel narratives--and also provokes the reader to think more deeply about the intersection between learning about ones country and learning about oneself.''-- Debra A.
Format: Electronic Resources
Lonely Planet's guide to travel photography / Richard I'Anson.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:288992024-05-05T17:00:46Z2024-05-05T17:00:46Zby I'Anson, Richard.
Call Number 778.9 IAN
Publication Date 2009
Format: Books
Who's buying for travel / by the New Strategist editors.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:2279762024-05-05T17:00:46Z2024-05-05T17:00:46Zby New Strategist Publications, Inc.
Call Number 338.47917304 22
Publication Date 2005
Format: Electronic Resources
Modernist travel writing [electronic resource] : intellectuals abroad / David G. Farley.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:2532282024-05-05T17:00:46Z2024-05-05T17:00:46Zby Farley, David G.
Call Number 809 22
Publication Date 2010
Summary Annotation As the study of travel writing has grown in recent years, scholars have largely ignored the literature of modernist writers. Modernist Travel Writing: Intellectuals Abroad, by David Farley, addresses this gap by examining the ways in which a number of writers employed the techniques and stylistic innovations of modernism in their travel narratives to variously engage the political, social, and cultural milieu of the years between the world wars. Modernist Travel Writingargues that the travel book is a crucial genre for understanding the development of modernism in the years between the wars, despite the established view that travel writing during the interwar period was largely an escapist genreone in which writers hearkened back to the realism of nineteenth-century literature in order to avoid interwar anxiety. Farley analyzes works that exist on the margins of modernism, generically and geographically, works that have yet to receive the critical attention they deserve, partly due to their classification as travel narratives and partly because of their complex modernist styles. The book begins by examining the ways that travel and the emergent travel regulations in the wake of the First World War helped shape Ezra PoundsCantos. From there, it goes on to examine E.E. Cummingss frustrated attempts to navigate the unworld of Soviet Russia in his bookEimi, Wyndham Lewiss satiric journey through colonial Morocco inFilibusters in Barbary, and Rebecca Wests urgent efforts to make sense of the fractious Balkan states inBlack Lamb and Grey Falcon. These modernist writers traveled to countries that experienced most directly the tumult of revolution, the effects of empire, and the upheaval of war during the years between World War I and World War II. Farleys study focuses on the question of what constitutes evidence for Pound, Lewis, Cummings, and West as they establish their authority as eyewitnesses, translate what they see for an audience back home, and attempt to make sense of a transformed and transforming modern world. Modernist Travel Writingmakes an original contribution to the study of literary modernism while taking a distinctive look at a unique subset within the growing field of travel writing studies. David Farleys work will be of interest to students and teachers in both of these fields as well as to early-twentieth-century literary historians and general enthusiasts of modernist studies.
Format: Electronic Resources
A history of Australian travel and tourism / John I. Additionally, it reviews the leading news media that covers the industry, the primary PR tools and audiences, and details the factors leading to PR's new prominence across the industry. It also provides informative sidebars with lists of key industry print media, top travel agencies, plus a Travel Industry Association of America case study of a post-9/11/2001 campaign to restore American confidence in travelling. It also includes a composite definition of PR, and tells how PR is a discipline distinctively different from publicity, propaganda, advertising, and marketing. The author notes how, over the past decade due to economic conditions, PR in many cases has been integrated with marketing communications and played an important role in both strategic and tactical marketing activities. Following this overview, the ensuing five chapters examine communications model specifics that are of special importance to the industry's major sectors: hotels/lodging establishments; restaurants; tourist attractions/destinations; and transportation services. Each of these sectors have their own special messages, PR tools, and audiences. For example, meeting planners and travel agents are of most importance to hotels, while travel agents are of little importance to airlines and restaurants. Also included is a chapter about what travel employers should understand about PR The chapters will be followed by appendices that will include: The top 30 U.S. Travel & Tourism Professional/Trade Associations; and the Leading U.S. Travel & Tourism Universities.
Format: Electronic Resources
My Travel Adventures and Secret Recipes : Culinary Adventures with Secret Recipes.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:3082582024-05-05T17:00:46Z2024-05-05T17:00:46Zby Hanau, Chef Wolfgang.
Call Number 641.50900000000001
Publication Date 2018
Format: Electronic Resources
Tourism, travel and hospitality law / Trevor C. From mangosteen fruit discovered in a colonial Indonesian marketplace to caviar served on the high seas in a cruise liner's luxurious dining saloon, The Food Adventurers narrates the history of eating on the most coveted of tourist journeys: the around-the-world adventure. The book looks at what tourists ate on these adventures, as well as what they avoided, and what kinds of meals they described in diaries, photographs, and postcards. Daniel E. Bender shows how circumglobal travel shaped popular fascination with world cuisines while leading readers on a culinary tour from Tahitian roast pig in the 1840s, to the dining saloon of the luxury Cunard steamer Franconia in the 1920s, to InterContinental and Hilton hotel restaurants in the 1960s and '70s.
Format: Electronic Resources
The great Australian bucket list : one-of-a-kind travel experiences / Robin Esrock.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:2881682024-05-05T17:00:46Z2024-05-05T17:00:46Zby Esrock, Robin, 1974-, author.
Call Number 919.404 ESR
Publication Date 2018
Summary Robin Esrock has the definitive list of the most spectacular destinations and experiences this sunburned land has to offer. "In Travel by Design, Boarnet and Crane demonstrate that the influence of the built environment on travel is more complex and misleading than often portrayed, a relationship that reveals predictable patterns and useful policy advice. The authors evaluate design reforms within the range of congestion management and air quality improvement policies, providing both policy advice and the first methodical assessment of the governmental and regulatory challenge of building fewer auto-dependent communities. Overall, the work gives a better understanding of how urban design influences travel behavior, while analyzing the potential for land use planning to address transportation problems."--BOOK JACKET. Nowhere is this phenomenon more evident than in the emerging practices of 'interactive travel'. Today's travellers are more likely than ever to pack a laptop or a mobile phone and to use these devices to stay in touch with friends and family members - as well as to connect with strangers and other travellers - while they are on the road. New practices such as location-aware navigating, travel blogging, flashpacking and Couchsurfing now shape the way travellers engage with each other, with their social networks, and with the world around them.
Format: Electronic Resources
The 2013-2014 travel & tourism market research handbook / by Richard K. Fortified with Thoreau's observations as revealed in A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers, Leff brought his own concept of mindful deep travel to these same New England waterways. His first-person narrative uses his ecological way of looking, of going deep rather than far, to show that our outward journeys are inseparable from our inward ones.
Format: Electronic Resources
Out of the blues travel & food show Volume 1 [digital videorecording] / with Michael Angelakis & Michael Keelan.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:300912024-05-05T17:00:46Z2024-05-05T17:00:46ZCall Number DVD 641.693 OUT V1
Publication Date 2002
Format: Books
Out of the blue travel & food show Volume 2 [digital videorecording] / with Michael Angelakis & Michael Keelan.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:300922024-05-05T17:00:46Z2024-05-05T17:00:46ZCall Number DVD 641.692 OUT V2
Publication Date 2002
Format: Books
Out of the blue travel & food show Volume 3 [digital veideorecording] / with Michael Angelakis & Michael Keelan.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:300932024-05-05T17:00:46Z2024-05-05T17:00:46ZCall Number DVD 641.692 OUT V3
Publication Date 2002
Format: Books
Orientations [electronic resource] : an anthology of East European travel writing, ca. 1550-2000 / edited by Wendy Bracewell.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:2398802024-05-05T17:00:46Z2024-05-05T17:00:46Zby Bracewell, Wendy.
Call Number 809.935914 22
Publication Date 2009
Summary "This anthology introduces readers to the rich body of travel writing from eastern Europe. This title is the seventh in an annual series - The Best Womens Travel Writing - that presents stimulating, inspiring, and uplifting adventures from women who have traveled to the ends of the earth to discover new places, peoples, and facets of themselves. The common threads connecting these stories are a womans perspective and fresh, compelling storytelling to make the reader laugh, weep, wish she were there, or be glad she wasnt. The points of view and perspectives are global, and themes are as eclectic as in all of our books, including stories that encompass spiritual growth, hilarity and misadventure, high adventure, romance, solo journeys, stories of service to humanity, family travel, and encounters with exotic cuisine.
Format: Books
Autumn in Piemonte : food and travel in Italy's northwest / Manuela Darling-Gansser ; photography by Simon Griffiths.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:219932024-05-05T17:00:46Z2024-05-05T17:00:46Zby Darling-Gansser, Manuela.
Call Number 641.5945 DAR
Publication Date 2005
Format: Books
Hotel, restaurant, and travel law : a preventive approach / Norman G. Divided into two sections, the book first concentrates on the theoretical aspects surrounding the use of RAISA in travel, tourism and hospitality. Themes explored include: economic fundamentals customer attitudes chatbot adoption service quality Following on from this, the second section concentrates on current and future use of RAISA technologies in specific subsectors of the tourism economy: hotels, restaurants, travel agencies, museums, and events. With an international scope of authorship and focus, the book is a useful reference source for scholars, students, and general readers interested in robotics, artificial intelligence, and automation technologies. And while the Indigenous tourism industry continues to grow, no comprehensive travel guide is currently available. Marcia Langton: Welcome to Country is a curated guidebook to Indigenous Australia and the Torres Strait Islands. In its pages, author Professor Marcia Langton offers fascinating insights into Indigenous languages and customs, history, native title, art and dance, storytelling, and cultural awareness and etiquette for visitors. This interest seems very much at odds with Locke's standing as an empirical philosopher because travellers' reports have acquired a reputation for unreliability. This book sets Locke's use of travel literature within the context of the natural historical methods of investigation associated with Francis Bacon and the Royal Society. It examines the notes which Locke made in his commonplace books to demonstrate that he was developing a form of comparative social anthropology and had a sympathetic attitude towards Native Americans despite his role as a colonial administrator."--Jacket.
Format: Electronic Resources
Big data and innovation in tourism, travel, and hospitality : managerial approaches, techniques, and applications / Marianna Sigala, Roya Rahimi, Mike Thelwall, editors.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:2980712024-05-05T17:00:46Z2024-05-05T17:00:46Zby Sigala, Marianna, editor.
Call Number 338.4791 BIG
Publication Date 2019
Format: Electronic Resources
Advances in social media for travel, tourism and hospitality new perspectives, practice and cases / edited by Marianna Sigala and Ulrike Gretzel.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:2913192024-05-05T17:00:46Z2024-05-05T17:00:46Zby Sigala, Marianna, editor.
Call Number 338.4791 ADV
Publication Date 2018
Format: Electronic Resources
Barrier-free travel [electronic resource] : a nuts and bolts guide for wheelers and slow walkers / Candy B. It is the only series of conference proceedings that comprehensively reviews, synthesizes, and identifies research needs and future research directions for the respective sub areas of the travel behaviour research field and presents up-to-date, state-of-the-art assessments by distinguished authors. This volume of the 11th International Conference on Travel Behavior Research, held in Kyoto, Japan, in August 2006, examines key issues and emerging trends in the expanding field of travel behavior. These proceedings contain: the keynote speeches of Professor John Urry of Lancaster University (sociology) and Professor Masahisa Fujita of (then) Kyoto University (economics); workshop resource papers by distinguished authors in nine subject areas; synthesis papers (with a focus on Asian developments); and 16 research papers selected from presentation sessions. Both were interested in the 'scientific' study of the child and especially in applied American psychology. They met well-known American professors and visited universities that were developing these aspects of educational psychology. Back in Belgium, they dedicated several books and articles to the issues discussed during the trip. Less known is that Raymond Buyse noted his impressions and reflections of the trip in a diary. Buyse writes in a lively style about his encounters with the 'great' psychologists and pedagogues of that time and in doing so this diary adds a new dimension to the study of the history of educational psychology in Belgium and far beyond.
Format: Electronic Resources
http://ezproxy.angliss.edu.au/login?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=714277
Egypt / Jessica Lee [and three others].ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:3116692024-05-05T17:00:46Z2024-05-05T17:00:46Zby Lee, Jessica, (Travel writer), author.
Call Number 916.204 EGY
Publication Date 2023
Summary Lonely Planet's Egypt is our most comprehensive guide that extensively covers all the country has to offer, with recommendations for both popular and lesser-known experiences. These two basic philosophies of travel are elaborated delightfully in Orvar Lofgren's investigation of "elsewhereness" as a human pursuit. Whether we set out in search of a mountainscape that will take our breath away, artifacts of the past to enrich our minds, the purest sand on the most unspoiled beach, or a summer place to know and cherish, we follow inner itineraries as time-honored and various as the routes we take." "Beginning his cultural journey among some eighteenth-century pioneers of tourism, Lofgren takes us on a tour of the Western holiday world and shows how two centuries of "learning to be a tourist" have shaped our own ways of vacationing. From country walks in search of the picturesque to wilderness trekking for more grandiose views, from seasonal campsites and communities on the coasts of New England and Sweden to Mediterranean resorts and rearranged ruins, from Continental spas to Las Vegas megahotels, we see how fashions in destinations have changed through the years, with popular images (written, drawn, painted, and later photographed) teaching the tourist what to look for and how to experience it." "The means of travel have bred their own expectations and rewards. Faster and more affordable transportation, besides permitting more than a small elite to go "on holiday," has led to the package tour and the globalization of tourism. In one of his most entertaining chapters, Lofgren talks about the ongoing battle that results from travelers' differing values: what is "authentic," and does it matter? What constitutes too much or too little, good or bad, the wrong or the right kind of travel? This battle, he says, is often fought in the ways we relate to other tourists--we mock, admire, emulate, or distance ourselves from them. "In the history of modern tourism one element is striking. The main tourist attraction tends to be ... other tourists."" "Travelers present and future will never see their cruises, treks, resort interludes, ecotours, round-the-world journeys, or trips to the vacation cottage or condo in quite the same way again. All our land-, sea-, and mindscapes will be the richer for Lofgren's insights. Reaching deep into the Southern Ocean, the Cape intrudes into the flow of the water and weather patterns at the bottom of the world and funnels them into a maritime superhighway a mere 500 miles wide, building massive seas and accelerating wind speeds to hurricane strength. Currents rip at rates that defeat powerful engines. These legendarily treacherous conditions were enough to secure Cape Horn's reputation as the ultimate in ocean violence; the supreme test of sailors and ships. It is the oceanic equivalent of the climbers' Everest, and the challenge to some became irresistible. The roll call of sailors who have managed to round the Horn east-about (and more rarely, head to wind and west-about) glitters with the names of sailing legends: Vito Dumas, Marcel Bardiaux, Francis Chichester, Robin Knox-Johnston, Bernard Moitessier and Chay Blyth. This book recounts the history of the Cape through the stories of the people who've taken it on and made it round -- the Cape Horners' Club. From the first recorded single-hander in 1934 (Al Hansen, who was lost shortly afterwards and his body never found), we follow these very different protagonists as they pursue the ultimate goal while battling almost overwhelming odds. Woven through their stories is a history of the Cape, from its discovery to its use as a trading corridor until the opening of the Panama Canal, to its more recent role as a pure challenge for the best yachtsmen and yachtswomen in the world. Changes in weather prediction and navigation have had a huge impact, but the pressure for ever-faster times has never been greater.
Format: Electronic Resources
http://ezproxy.angliss.edu.au/login?url=http://ezproxy.angliss.edu.au/login?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=1488470
Anthologyent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:1234832024-05-05T17:00:46Z2024-05-05T17:00:46ZCall Number PER 642 ANT ISSUE NO. 13 FALL 2013
Format: Books Other
The upside-down tree [electronic resource] : India's changing culture / Richard Connerney.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:2376722024-05-05T17:00:46Z2024-05-05T17:00:46Zby Connerney, Richard D.
Call Number 954.0532 22
Publication Date 2009
Summary When he called India a"functioning anarchy," economist Kenneth Galbraith may have been thinking about Uttar Pradesh (UP), in northern India. Some Indians laughingly refer to Uttar Pradesh as a"loser state." Known as a home of deep poverty, incurable corruption and sticky social problems, UP is not the India that now appears regularly in The New York Times and Newsweek. This is the "other" India; the one that modernity has largely left behind, and this book is the result of Rick Connerney's repeated residencies over the last 18 years in that state.
Format: Electronic Resources
Malta & Gozo / Abigail Blasi.ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:3118292024-05-05T17:00:46Z2024-05-05T17:00:46Zby Blasi, Abigail, author.
Call Number 914.58504 MAL
Publication Date 2023
Summary Lonely Planet's Malta and Gozo is our most comprehensive guide that extensively covers all the country has to offer, with recommendations for both popular and lesser-known experiences. He passed through the Caribbean, lived for a time in the mountains of Veracruz, and journeyed to Mexico City through the cities of Puebla and Cholula. After a brief residence in the capital, Heller moved westward to examine the volcanoes and silver mines near Toluca. When the United States invaded Mexico in 1846 & ndash;47 conditions became chaotic, and the enterprising botanist was forced to flee to Yucatan. Seemingly untouched by modern times, they seemed like the "old" Caribbean - small, intimate hotels, pristine beaches, uncluttered roads, with acres of cane fields and rainforests dominating the landscape. You still find hints of the old laid-back islands here, especially in the delightful plantation inns on both islands. These small hotels, built around historical buildings and sugar mills, still have a colonial charm.
