Our definition of what constitutes health has expanded beyond the purely medical, yet the delivery of modern medicine to the patient often fails to take this into account. Doctors, anthropologists, psychologists and sociologists have all written on the subject, but thus far the literature has been fragmented between the disciplines." "David Aldridge presents the first unified approach to the subject. In Spirituality, Healing and Medicine he evaluates the existing literature from across the disciplines to ascertain just how effective and influential spiritual healing may be on the patient's physical and psychological well-being. He encourages us to redefine treatment strategies and the ways in which we understand health, and argues that the spiritual elements of experience help the patient to find purpose, meaning and hope in the face of sickness. It is in the understanding of suffering and the need for deliverance from it, he suggests, that the traditions and aims of medicine and spirituality meet."--BOOK JACKET. Children and adolescents in our communities are exposed to disastrous and devastating events, including natural disasters, violence, accidents, and, most recently, terrorist attacks, that have a great impact on their emotional and physical well-being. Children in Disasters is a training manual and reference for those who provide psychological relief in the wake of disasters. The expert contributors offer guidance for helping children integrate their traumatic experiences, develop healthy coping skills, and restore a sense of safety.
Format: Electronic Resources
Industrial development in Singapore, Taiwan, and South Korea [electronic resource] / Kwong Kai-Sun [and others]. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:238412 2024-05-14T17:34:50Z 2024-05-14T17:34:50Z Call Number 338.0951 22
Publication Date 2001
Summary Economic analysis of the industrial experiences of the newly industrialized economies in Asia is generally lacking in the literature. This study attempts to fill that void by providing an in-depth discussion on the economic impact of the industrial policies of Singapore, Taiwan, and South Korea in the three-and-a-half decades after 1960. Throughout the study, a broad perspective of macroeconomic development is maintained. It is highly critical of the narrow-minded objective of certain governments in maximizing the pace of industrialization at the expense of general economic well-being. A comparative analysis of the industrial experiences of the three economies also shows a diversity of constraints and processes. Singapore relied on multinational corporations, Taiwan on returned engineers, and South Korea on chaebols. There appears to be no Asian formula for industrialization. In Hong Kong, there is an ongoing debate on whether some form of industrial policy should be introduced, in view of the perception that Hong Kong is lagging behind the other economies in terms of technology. Drawing on the experiences of the other economies, the concluding chapter of the book provides an informed and balanced answer to this question.
Format: Electronic Resources
Power performance for singers [electronic resource] : transcending the barriers / Shirlee Emmons, Alma Thomas. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:247371 2024-05-14T17:34:50Z 2024-05-14T17:34:50Z by Emmons, Shirlee.
Call Number 783.043 22
Publication Date 1998
Summary To perform well in today's highly competitive world where technical skills have been advanced to an unprecedented degree, a singer must be able to handle incredible pressure within the performing arena; his or her ability to deal with this stress will often determine whether he or she will succeed. We know intuitively that these states express deep things about our character and our view of the world. But what are emotions, and why are they so important to us? In one of the most extensive investigations of the emotions ever published, Robert C. Roberts develops a novel conception of what emotions are and then applies it to a large range of types of emotion and related phenomena. In so doing, he lays the foundations for a deeper understanding of our evaluative judgments, our actions, our personal relationships, and our fundamental well-being. Aimed principally at philosophers and psychologists, this book will certainly be accessible to readers in other disciplines such as religion and anthropology."--Publisher's description.
Format: Electronic Resources
Biodiversity, sustainability, and human communities [electronic resource] : protecting beyond the protected / edited by Tim O'Riordan and Susanne Stoll-Kleemann. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:252247 2024-05-14T17:34:50Z 2024-05-14T17:34:50Z by O'Riordan, Timothy.
Call Number 333.95160973 22
Publication Date 2002
Summary "Biodiversity is the key indicator of a healthy planet and healthy society. Losses of biodiversity have now become widespread and current rates are potentially catastrophic for species and habitat integrity. Biodiversity, Sustainability and Human Communities advocates both the preservation of the best remaining habitats and the enhancement of new biodiverse habitats to ensure that they cope with human impact, climate change and alien species invasion. The authors argue that these aims can be achieved by a mix of strict protection, by inclusive involvement of people inside and adjacent to reserves, and by combining livelihoods and social wellbeing in all future biodiversity management."--Jacket.
Format: Electronic Resources
Nature, God, and humanity : envisioning an ethics of nature / Richard L. From her years of experience as a clergywoman working with older people in care settings, the author provides guidelines for pastoral visits to people with dementia, showing how to empathise with, understand and support individuals during a visit. She discusses what constitutes spiritual well-being in individuals and suggests ways in which this can be nurtured. Emphasising the importance of retaining dignity and freedom of choice for people with dementia, she also presents practical advice about memory cueing and leading worship for those with dementia. This book is a useful resource for a variety of people involved in pastoral care with older people, whether professionals or volunteers, from a respected author in the field of psychogeriatric care.
Format: Electronic Resources
Social work and health care in an aging society [electronic resource] : education, policy, practice, and research / Barbara Berkman, editor ; Linda Harootyan, associate editor. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:234810 2024-05-14T17:34:50Z 2024-05-14T17:34:50Z by Berkman, Barbara.
Call Number 362.60973 22
Publication Date 2003
Summary This book places significant issues related to the health, mental health, and well-being of older adults and their caregivers within the context of social work service delivery. In this book, Alex Tuckness argues that John Locke's potential contribution to this debate--what Tuckness terms the "legislative point of view"--Has long been obscured by overemphasis on his doctrine of consent. This innovative volume draws upon recent research in archaeology, ancient history, and the history of medicine to evaluate all these issues. It addresses a wide range of topics, including views of ancient disease causation; public and private health measures; how the natural and urban environment affected the well-being of the individual; how the city was organised to protect the health and safety of the living; and how the living sought protection from the polluting influence of both the diseased and the dead. Lucid and accessible, this work is the first to unite the study of death and disease in antiquity, providing valuable insights into how these factors shaped the ancient city. It will appeal not only to classical scholars and students, but to all those interested in the history of death and disease.
Format: Electronic Resources
The self and society in aging processes [electronic resource] / Carol D. The same forces that are rapidly "McDonaldizing" the world's diverse cultures are also driving us toward an era of monotonous, weedy, and uniformly impoverished landscapes. Unique plant and animal communities are slowly succumbing to the world's "rats and rubbervines"--Animals like zebra mussels and feral pigs, and plants like kudzu and water hyacinth--that, once moved into new territory, can disrupt human enterprise and well-being as well as native habitats and biodiversity. From songbird-eating snakes in Guam to cheatgrass in the Great Plains, "invasives" are wreaking havoc around the world. In A plague of rats and rubbervines, Yvonne Baskin draws on extensive research to provide an engaging and authoritative overview of the problem of harmful invasive alien species. She takes the reader on a worldwide tour of grasslands, gardens, waterways, and forests, describing the troubles caused by exotic organisms that run amok in new settings and examining how commerce and travel on an increasingly connected planet are exacerbating this oldest of human-created problems. She offers examples of potential solutions and profiles dedicated individuals worldwide who are working tirelessly to protect the places and creatures they love. While our attention is quick to focus on purposeful attempts to disrupt our lives and economies by releasing harmful biological agents, we often ignore equally serious but much more insidious threats, those that we inadvertently cause by our own seemingly harmless actions. This book takes a compelling look at this underappreciated problem and sets forth positive suggestions for what we, as consumers, can do to help.
Format: Electronic Resources
Preventing stress, improving productivity : European case studies in the workplace / edited by Michiel Kompier and Cary Cooper. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:222945 2024-05-14T17:34:50Z 2024-05-14T17:34:50Z by Kompier, Michiel.
Call Number 658.382 21
Publication Date 1999
Summary Changing the workplace to help prevent stress is much more cost effective in the long term than treating employees for the effects of stress. Elected officials have begun proposing potentially costly programs to intervene early in the lives of disadvantaged children. Have such interventions been demonstrated to yield substantial benefits? To what extent might they pay for themselves through lower welfare and criminal justice costs incurred by participating children as they grow into adults? This study synthesizes the results of a number of previous evaluations in an effort to answer those questions. Conclusions are that under carefully controlled conditions, early childhood interventions can yield substantial advantages to recipients in terms of emotional and cognitive development, education, economic well-being, and health. (The latter two benefits apply to the children's families as well.) If these interventions can be duplicated on a large scale, the costs of the programs could be exceeded by subsequent savings to the government. However, the more carefully the interventions are targeted to children most likely to benefit, the more likely it is that savings will exceed costs. Unfortunately, these conclusions rest on only a few methodologically sound studies. The authors argue for broader demonstrations accompanied by rigorous evaluations to resolve several important unknowns. These include the most efficient ways to design and target programs, the extent to which effectiveness is lost on scale-up, and the implications of welfare reform and other "safety net" changes.
Format: Electronic Resources
Family foster care in the next century / Kathy Barbell and Lois Wright, editors. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:310439 2024-05-14T17:34:50Z 2024-05-14T17:34:50Z by Barbell, Kathy, editor.
Call Number 362.7330973 23
Publication Date 2017 2001
Summary Family foster care is supposed to provide temporary protection and nurturing for children experiencing maltreatment. Although it has long been a critical service for millions of children in the United States, the increased attention given to this service in the last two decades has focused more on its inability to achieve its intended outcomes than on its successes. However, as social and political trends and new legislation reshape child welfare, policymakers and service providers continue to offer innovative policy and practice options for this child welfare service. Though use of the service has changed, family foster care remains important. Responding to a widespread sense of the "drifting" of children in care, Congress passed the Adoption Assistance and Child Welfare ACt of 1980. This legislation became a key factor shaping the current status of family foster care. Its goal was to reduce reliance on out-of-home care and encourage use of preventative and reunification services; it also mandated that agencies engage in planning efforts for permanent solutions for foster children. Yet despite federal mandates and funding, the child welfare system has continued to struggle to provide the level of services needed for children to reduce the amount of time children remain in temporary foster care. The latest response to these problems, the Adoption and Safe Families Act of 1997, established unequivocally that safety, permanency, and well-being were national goals for children in the child welfare system. To comply with the law, public and private agencies are required to initiate significant program and practice changes in the coming years to improve permanency outcomes and child well-being in family foster care. The central theme of the volume is accountability for outcomes, certainly a current driving force in child welfare as well as in other public and private service fields."--Back of book
Format: Electronic Resources
http://ezproxy.angliss.edu.au/login?url=http://ezproxy.angliss.edu.au/login?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=1692853
Paths to successful development : personality in the life course / edited by Lea Pulkkinen and Avshalom Caspi. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:226273 2024-05-14T17:34:50Z 2024-05-14T17:34:50Z by Pulkkinen, Lea.
Call Number 155.25 22
Publication Date 2002
Summary This important new book, edited by two distinguished psychologists, explores the relationship between personality and development and is unique in focussing on successful development, where developmental psychology in the past seems to have focused almost entirely on problem behaviour and risk of maladaption.
Format: Electronic Resources
Biological wealth & other essays [electronic resource] / K.R. Our future wellbeing depends on the care and conservation that we practice to protect and enhance that biodiversity, which resides mostly in developing countries. Yet, the holders of traditional knowledge remain poor, while those exploiting it commercially become prosperous. As we utilize recombinant DNA technology to achieve food security and other goals, serious apprehension has arisen in the public mind with regard to the impact of genetically modified crops on our environment and health. Similarly, the long-term impact of gene therapy is not known either. These dilemmas and their ethical implications are examined in this book in the context of intellectual property rights and international cooperation.
Format: Electronic Resources
The good in nature and humanity : connecting science, religion, and spirituality with the natural world / edited by Stephen R. The book explores the ways in which science, spirit, and religion can guide the experience and understanding of our ongoing relationship with the natural world and examines how the integration of science and spirituality can equip us to make wiser choices in using and managing the natural environment. The book also provides compelling stories that offer a narrative understanding of the relations among science, spirit, and nature. Grounded in the premise that neither science nor religion can by itself resolve the prevailing malaise of environmental and moral decline, contributors seek viable approaches to averting environmental catastrophe and, to achieving a more harmonious relationship with the natural world.
Format: Electronic Resources
Proclaiming political pluralism : churches and political transitions in Africa / Isaac Phiri. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:228824 2024-05-14T17:34:50Z 2024-05-14T17:34:50Z by Phiri, Isaac, 1962-
Call Number 261.70968 21
Publication Date 2001
Summary As the population of Africa increasingly converts to Christianity, the church has stepped up its involvement in secular affairs revolving around the transition to democracy in nations such as Zambia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. Comparative in approach, the author analyzes patterns of church-state relations in various sub-Saharan countries, and contends that churches become more active and politically prominent when elements and organizations of civil society are repressed by political factors or governing bodies, providing services to maintain the well-being of civil society in the absence of those organizations being repressed. The author concludes, that once political repression subsides, churches tend to withdraw from a confrontation with the state and their political role becomes unclear. This unique book advances the idea that in pluralist Africa, churches should focus their influence and resources on nurturing the fragile multiparty democracies and promoting peace and reconciliation. In his analysis of church-state relations in sub-Saharan Africa, Phiri shows how churches are drawn into confrontation with the state by the repression of civil society and that once civil society is liberated, direct church-state confrontation diminishes. In South Africa, churches led by figures such as Bishop Desmond Tutu assumed a major role after nationalist movements such as Nelson Mandela's African National Congress were banned and their leaders jailed. In Zimbabwe, the church assumed a confrontational role in 1965 after political movements were banned and their leaders exiled. In Zambia, churches became confrontational when the single-party rule repressed all opposition and supported the rise of the prodemocracy movement that ended Kenneth Kaunda's twenty-seven-year rule. Examining these situations and others in different parts of Africa, Phiri illuminates the major issues and conflicts and suggests ways in which the church can continue to help promote smooth transitions to democracy.
Format: Electronic Resources
Understanding marriage : developments in the study of couple interaction / edited by Patricia Noller, Judith A. E. Walter and Annie S.D. Maunder's work helped in understanding our sun's chemical, electromagnetic and plasma properties. They knew the sun's sunspot migration patterns and its variable, climate-affecting, inactive and active states in short and long time frames. An inactive solar period starting in the mid-seventeenth century lasted approximately seventy years, one that E. Walter Maunder worked hard to make us understand: the Maunder Minimum of c 1620-1720 (which was posthumously named for him). With ongoing concern over global warming, and the continuing failure to identify root causes driving earth's climatic changes, the Maunders' story outlines how our cyclical sun can alter climate. The book goes on to view the sun-earth connection in terms of geomagnetic variation and climatic change; contemporary views on the sun's operating mechanisms are explored, and the effects these have on the earth over long and short time scales are pondered. If not a call to widen earth's climate research to include the sun, this book strives to illustrate how solar causes and effects can influence earth's climate in ways we must understand in order to enhance solar system research and our well-being.
Format: Electronic Resources
Dignity at work / Randy Hodson. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:222398 2024-05-14T17:34:50Z 2024-05-14T17:34:50Z by Hodson, Randy.
Call Number 306.36 21
Publication Date 2001
Summary "Human dignity, the ability to establish a sense of self-worth and self-respect and to enjoy the respect of others, is necessary for a fully realized life. Working with dignity is a fundamental part of achieving a life well-lived, yet the workplace often poses challenging obstacles because of mismanagement or managerial abuse. Defending dignity and realizing self-respect through work are key to workers' well-being. Insuring the dignity of employees is equally important for organizations as they attempt to make effective use of their human capital. In this book Randy Hodson, a sociologist of work and organizational behavior, applies ethnographic and statistical approaches to this topic, offering both a richly detailed, inside look at real examples of dignity in action, and a broader analysis of the pivotal role of dignity at work. How do people attain and maintain dignity in the face of assaults on dignity at work? How can management within organizations help to preserve dignity and thus enhance workers' social relations, organizational integrity, and productivity? This book sheds valuable light on the mechanisms by which workers become satisfied and committed employees. Hodson's exploration of these questions includes ethnographic detail from diverse settings, ranging from automobile manufacturing, to medicine, to home-based sales and temporary clerical work. He focuses on four problems that deflate morale and create conflict: outright mismanagement and abuse, overwork, limits on autonomy, and contradictions of employee involvement. He also analyzes strategies that workers use to maintain and defend their dignity: resistance, citizenship, the creation of independent meaning systems, and the development of social relations at work. Hodson offers a valuable picture of the causes, consequences, and patterns of workers' efforts to maintain dignity. He finds that even in workplaces where abuse is common and mismanagement makes pride in accomplishment difficult, workers still find ways to create meaning in work and to achieve self-respect. He uses his findings and analysis to reevaluate contemporary workplace theories, including those based on the traditions of Marx, Weber, Durkheim, Foucault, and feminist theories of the workplace. Hodson's conceptual model of human agency and dignity contributes broadly to our understanding of the nature of work in advanced societies."--Publisher's description.
Format: Electronic Resources
Companion animals in human health [electronic resource] / Cindy C. The 7th International Conference on Animals, Health, and Quality of Life set out to explore this question. A major result of this quest was Companion Animals in Human Health, a careful selection of jurored and invited papers from that conference. The articles in this volume address Human Animal Interaction (HAI) according to the elements that define quality of life: physical, mental, emotional, and social health; functional health; and general well-being. Beginning with an overview of human/animal interaction from historical and value perspectives, the authors develop a conceptual framework for HAI research and quality of life measurement. They then go on to explore the psychosocial and physiological impact of HAI. The concluding sections address the role of companion animals in human development and the training and welfare of animals in therapeutic programs.
Format: Electronic Resources
The psychology of good and evil : why children, adults, and groups help and harm others / Ervin Staub. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:226152 2024-05-14T17:34:50Z 2024-05-14T17:34:50Z by Staub, Ervin.
Call Number 155.232 22
Publication Date 2003
Summary "This book gathers together the knowledge gained in a lifelong study of the causes of goodness and evil. Since the 1960s Ervin Staub has studied the roots of helpful, caring, generous, and altruistic behavior in adults and their development in children, as well as passivity in response to others' need. He has also studied bullying and victimization in schools, as well as youth violence and its prevention. He spent many years studying the origins (and prevention) of human destructiveness, genocide, and mass killing, and he has examined the Holocaust, the genocide of the Armenians, the disappearances in Argentina, the genocide in Rwanda, and other instances. He has applied his work in many real-world settings, in seminars, workshops, lectures, and in consultations with parents and teachers, police officers, and political leaders. He has appeared frequently in the media, since September 11 especially, to explain the causes and prevention of terrorism. Professor Staub has published, in addition to books, many articles and book chapters on these topics. A selection from these is gathered, with new writings added, in The Psychology of Good and Evil. The book presents a broad panorama of the roots of violence and caring and suggests how we can create societies and a world that are caring, peaceful, and harmonious. Two of the important themes of the book are how both evil and goodness evolve, step by step, and the great power of bystanders."--Jacket.
Format: Electronic Resources
A Survey of sustainable development : social and economic dimensions / edited by Jonathan M.
