Conflict can be destructive. Thousands of years of history have shown that human beings have always struggled to resolve disputes calmly and nonviolently. Now our society has less respect for its institutions and authority figures than ever because most people don't know how to lead out of a conflict stalemate. But, says Hesha Abrams, it doesn't have to be this way. Holding the Calm is the ultimate guide to help mediators of all kinds develop workable, immediate conflict management skills to approach workplace issues, lawsuits, marriage disputes, and everyday arguments. It is chock full of tools and techniques designed to facilitate civilized discussions involving drastically opposing viewpoints. The book's short chapters are written in an easy, accessible format to impart rich skills, anecdotes, and lessons that will arm leaders with the best approaches to conflict. This book teaches readers how to pick the right solution for the right situation-like when to turn lemons into lemonade and when to reach for the tequila and salt. Nagler identifies some specific tactical mistakes made by unsuccessful nonviolent actions such as the Tiananmen Square demonstrations and the Occupy protests and includes stories of successful nonviolent resistance from around the world, including an example from Nazi Germany. Some give way to renewed, and often escalating, violence. In other cases, peace processes have become interminably protracted: lengthy and circular negotiations in which concessions are rare. Given the huge material and human costs of a failed peace process, the international community has a strong interest in helping these processes succeed and addressing threats to their implementation. Challenges to Peacebuilding approaches this problem by focussing on 'spoilers': groups and tactics that actively seek to obstruct or undermine conflict settlement through a variety of means, including terrorism and violence. It considers why spoilers and spoiling behaviour emerge and how they can be addressed, drawing upon experience from Northern Ireland, the Basque region, Bosnia, Colombia, Israel-Palestine, Cyprus, the Caucasus and Kashmir. This volume takes a 'critical' approach to the concept of spoiling and considers a broad range of actors as potential spoilers: not only rebel groups and insurgents, but also diasporas, governments, and other entities. It also demonstrates that ill-conceived or imposed peace processes can themselves sow the seeds of spoiling.
Format: Electronic Resources
Natural conflict resolution / edited by Filippo Aureli and Frans B.M. de Waal. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:224881 2024-05-15T06:44:49Z 2024-05-15T06:44:49Z by Aureli, Filippo, 1962-
Call Number 303.69 22
Publication Date 2000
Summary Annotation Aggression and competition are customarily presented as the natural state of affairs in both human society and the animal kingdom. Yet, as this book shows, our species relies heavily on cooperation for survival as do many others & mdash;from wolves and dolphins to monkeys and apes. A distinguished group of fifty-two authors, including many of the world's leading experts on human and animal behavior, review evidence from multiple disciplines on natural conflict resolution, making the case that reconciliation and compromise are as much a part of our heritage as is waging war. Chimpanzees kiss and embrace after a fight. Children will appeal to fairness when fighting over a toy. This book examines narratives-in-interaction co-constructed by participants in formal mediation sessions, by asking how many of the five cases in the videotaped data display the adversarial narrative pattern pervasive within the interpersonal conflict literature, and secondly what other narrative patterns may be present, and how do they work? Focusing simultaneously at the utterance level and the macro-levels present within the larger dispute context, this book reveals situated communicative practives by which interlocutors interactively construct, resist, reproduce, and intertextually transform adversarial narratives to produce outcomes consonant with their underlying interests. In constrast to the dramaturgical model traditionally used in narrative research, this book illuminates the emergent, microgenetic character of narrative development."--Jacket.
Format: Electronic Resources
Face it : recognizing and conquering the hidden fear that drives all conflict at work / Art Horn. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:228481 2024-05-15T06:44:49Z 2024-05-15T06:44:49Z by Horn, Art, 1954-
Call Number 650.13 22
Publication Date 2004
Summary Conquer fear--before it overwhelms your workplace. It offers a historical and comparative context that adds up to a causal taxonomy of genocidal events. Rather than suggesting that such horrors are the product of abnormal or criminal minds, the authors emphasize the normality of these horrors: killing by category has occurred on every continent and in every century. But genocide is much less common than the imbalance of power that makes it possible. Throughout history human societies have developed techniques aimed at limiting intergroup violence. Incorporating ethnographic, historical, and current political evidence, this book examines the mechanisms of constraint that human societies have employed to temper partisan passions and reduce carnage."--Jacket.
Format: Electronic Resources
Theorizing the standoff : contingency in action / Robin Wagner-Pacifici. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:222131 2024-05-15T06:44:49Z 2024-05-15T06:44:49Z by Wagner-Pacifici, Robin Erica.
Call Number 303.6 21
Publication Date 2000
Summary This book combines original theoretical analysis with real life case studies to examine the nature of the standoff. When such competition entails military confrontation or war, the pressure to escalate can become intense due to the potential cost of losing contests of deadly force. Cold War-era thinking about escalation focused on the dynamics of bipolar, superpower confrontation and strategies to control it. Today's security environment, however, demands that the United States be prepared for a host of escalatory threats involving not only longstanding nuclear powers, but also new, lesser nuclear powers and irregular adversaries, such as insurgent groups and terrorists. This examination of escalation dynamics and approaches to escalation management draws on historical examples from World War I to the struggle against global jihad. It reveals that, to manage the risks of escalatory chain reactions in future conflicts, military and political leaders will need to understand and dampen the mechanisms of deliberate, accidental, and inadvertent escalation. Informing the analysis are the results of two modified Delphi exercises, which focused on a potential conflict between China and the United States over Taiwan and a potential conflict between states and nonstate actors in the event of a collapse of Pakistan's government."--Jacket.
Format: Electronic Resources
The steps to war [electronic resource] : an empirical study / Paul D. An Anatomy of Everyday Arguments examines the structure and dynamics of conflict to find new ways forward. Marnie Jull analyzes four personal stories through the lens of the Insight approach, an innovative way to decipher and reshape the direction of everyday conflicts that draws from the theories of Bernard Lonergan. Jull dissects arguments that range from a quarrel about chores to a high-stakes organizational impasse, exploring the internal process of decision-making that shapes conflict behaviour within complex social contexts. Without dismissing the importance of responsible conflict, the Insight approach encourages people in the heat of an argument to engage less rashly with threat. Jull's entertaining storytelling and meticulous analysis integrate findings from sociology, conflict resolution, interpersonal communication, psychology, facilitation, ethnography, anthropology, and qualitative research methodology. At a time of increasingly polarized global debate, the Insight approach lays the groundwork for new possibilities to emerge. The genesis for this work was the broader issue of how the Air Force should integrate kinetic and nonkinetic operations. Central to this process was careful consideration of how escalation options and risks should be treated, which, in turn, demanded a broader consideration across the entire crisis-management spectrum. Such crises can be managed by taking steps to reduce the incentives for other states to step into crisis, by controlling the narrative, understanding the stability parameters of the crises, and trying to manage escalation if conflicts arise from crises."--Page 4 of cover.
Format: Electronic Resources
A Zionist among Palestinians / Hillel Bardin ; foreword by Mubarak Awad and Edward (Edy) Kaufman. ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:277396 2024-05-15T06:44:49Z 2024-05-15T06:44:49Z by Bardin, Hillel.
Call Number 956.94054 23
Publication Date 2012
Summary A Zionist among Palestinians offers the perspective of an ordinary Israeli citizen who became concerned about the Israeli military's treatment of Palestinians and was moved to work for peace. As the victors and the vanquished struggle to establish a new political order, incidents of low-level violence frequently occur and can escalate into an unstable peace or renewed conflict. Michael J. Boyle evaluates the dynamics of post-conflict violence and their consequences in Violence after War. In this systematic comparative study, Boyle analyzes a cross-national dataset of violent acts from 52 post-conflict states and examines, in depth, violence patterns from five recent post-conflict states: Bosnia, Rwanda, Kosovo, East Timor, and Iraq. In each of the case studies, Boyle traces multiple pathways through which violence emerges in post-conflict states and highlights how the fragmentation of combatants, especially rebel groups, produces unexpected and sometimes surprising shifts in the nature, type, and targets of attack. His case studies are based on unpublished data on violent crime, including some from fieldwork in Kosovo, East Timor, and Bosnia, and a thorough review of narrative and witness accounts of the attacks. The case study of Iraq comes from data that Boyle obtained directly from U.S. Central Command, published here for the first time."--Publisher's description.
Format: Electronic Resources
http://ezproxy.angliss.edu.au/login?url=http://ezproxy.angliss.edu.au/login?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=662187
Liberating Kosovo : coercive diplomacy and U.S. intervention / David L.
