Summary Farmers have always needed to go out and poison, trap and shoot foxes to keep their numbers down, but now Australian scientists have come up with a more effective and humane solution, by developing a contraceptive vaccine to control pest populations, including foxes, rabbits and mice. Zoologist Michael Archer says harvesting is the only way to ensure that kangaroos survive. It's important to put an economic value on kangaroos and not treat them as pests to be culled. In this way the populations are monitored and managed and protected from demise. Attempting to clone the Tasmanian Tiger, scientists are trying to use DNA from a preserved specimen to bring the thylocene back from extinction.
